Social Media Research Firm Fizziology Launches in U.K....

The company will provide information on U.K. buzz to entertainment companies and brands.

LONDON - Social media research firm Fizziology has launched a research arm for the U.K. to provide new geographically-focused information on social media buzz to entertainment companies and brands.

The company uses sentiment analysis to track audience opinions on a movie or TV shows based on what people share on Twitter, Facebook and blogs. Based on its work, it also provides box office predictions, advertising analysis, guidance on casting decisions and other things.

While social media trackers typically collect global data, Fizziology uses a three-layer language and geo-location approach to capture only U.K. social media conversations. "Fizziology is able to deliver U.K.-based intelligence to help studios, networks and brands better determine how to craft their marketing strategies for the U.K. without the noise of additional markets," the company said.

It plans to launch similar services in other international markets as well.

"Every market is a little different," explained Ben Carlson, president and co-creator of Fizziology, the need for geographically targeted data. "Different characters and storylines or lines pop in different markets. And some programming only airs in one. This gives us the ability to parse it and provide a much truer look for decision makers who are making or marketing the show."

The company provided a recent example of a show that ended its season in the U.S., while it was still in full swing in Britain.

"For example, when analyzing conversation around a TV show like The Newsroom, we can determine which social media conversations are taking place amongst the U.S. audience versus those that occurred in the U.K.," said Jen Handley, COO and co-creator of Fizziology. "With the trend towards same-day international release dates for movies and television shows, the ability to know whether a certain conversation trend is coming from the U.K. or another audience becomes even more important."

She said British social media conversations about The Newsroom focused more on the relationships between characters than in the U.S., for example, which TV network marketers could use to tailor their marketing messages.

"In addition to being able to better measure U.K. social media buzz from a data perspective, we are focused on providing understanding and intelligence tailored to the U.K. market," said Carlson. He said the coding of social media conversations is being handled by people in the U.K. who can pick up regional cultural references and analyze phrases that may be lost on U.S. researchers.

Industry News: Walt Disney Studios executive details counter offensive against DVD industry woe

Cheap DVD rentals, Internet movie piracy, and a sour economy: These are the causes of the storm ravaging Hollywood's home entertainment business.

Walt Disney Studios Distribution President Bob Chapek, addressing Wall Street analysts attending Disney's investor conference Thursday in Anaheim, cited all three factors as contributing to the industry-wide decline in DVD sales. And on top of that, he added, new technologies such as Blu-ray high-definition discs, aren't growing quickly enough to offset the declines.

Chapek said Disney is doing what it can to entice consumers to buy its movies, by offering new forms of packaging that offer greater perceived value, such as the "Beauty and the Beast Diamond Edition," which included Blu-ray and DVD discs.

Disney is also willing to experiment with "release windows," as it did in issuing Tim Burton's movie "Alice in Wonderland" on DVD three months after its theatrical premiere (instead of the usual four-month wait).

Chapek said Disney would also seek higher margins from the rental business, increasing the wholesale price it charges for the DVDs sold to discount movie rental services Redbox and Netflix. He noted Disney will drop the wholesale price to $10 for each DVD six weeks after its goes on sale retail.

The timing is slightly different from what we initially reported, which indicated Disney would make the movies available to Netflix and Redbox beginning 28 days after their initial DVD release. But Chapek's announcement confirms the main significance of Disney's shift in strategy with Netflix and Redbox: By charging the retailers more at the wholesale level, the movie studio hopes to mitigate the effect low-cost rentals will have on higher-margin DVD sales.

Industry News: Canadian Court Overrules Ottawa's Telecom Policy...

February 6, 2011

Push by Canadian government to relax foreign ownership rules on domestic entertainment companies thrown into doubt.

TORONTO -- The Canadian government's push to relax foreign ownership limits on domestic entertainment companies has hit a major roadblock.
The Federal Court of Canada on Friday quashed a 2009 decision by Ottawa to overturn a CRTC regulatory ruling that denied a license for an Egyptian -owned wireless telecom company, Globalive Communications, to operate here.
The uncertainty over Canada's telecom sector, and its foreign ownership rules and regulation, comes a day after the federal cabinet forced the CRTC to reconsider its rules on usage-based billing for Internet users.
Justice Rogers Hughes of the federal cabinet in a written decision said the ruling Conservative government made two errors when it made the 2009 decision, which must be struck down.
The federal court reserved the judgment for 45 days, allowing Globalive to continue operating in the Canadian market, at least for now. Current Canadian foreign ownership rules demand that operational control of domestic broadcasters, phone companies, cable and satellite TV operators reside in Canadian hands.
The original decision to deny a mobile carrier license to Globalive, and Friday's federal court decision, marked a victory for incumbent mobile players Rogers Communications, Telus Corp. and Bell Canada, who contend that an Egyptian-controlled company should not be allowed to operate in Canada.
Ottawa, in originally overruling the CRTC and OKing the entry of upstart Globalive into Canada's mobile phone market, for its part signaled a phased liberalization of foreign ownership rules for domestic telecom and satellite companies.
That move was likely to have a knock-on impact on Canadian cable and broadcast players. Globalive in a statement expressed disappointment at the federal court decision, and reiterated support from the federal cabinet for its Canadian business.
"This court decision does not suggest that cabinet got it wrong, only that cabinet made two errors in explaining their rationale and characterizing the decision," Globalive chairman Anthony Lacavera said.
