Televisa saw quarterly net income nearly double on strong growth from its broadcast and pay TV units

The Spanish-language media powerhouse has positioned itself to conquer U.S. Hispanic market.

MEXICO CITY -- Mexican media group Televisa saw quarterly net income nearly double on strong growth from its broadcast and pay TV units.

Televisa Station Reportedly Hit by Grenade Attack

Univision Adds Discovery CEO David Zaslav, Televisa Top Executive to Board

Lionsgate, Televisa Ink TV Pact for the U.S. Hispanic Market
The nation's top network reported a first-quarter net profit of 1.5 billion pesos (about $118 million), up from 780 million pesos a year ago. Net sales rose 15 percent to 15.2 billion pesos, driven by solid ad sales from its over-the-air channels. Televisa controls an estimated 70 percent of the broadcast TV market here.
The Mexican media giant's pay TV and telecom division also came up big, thanks to increases in subscriber bases at satcaster Sky and Televisa's three cable TV outfits.
As one of the world's leading producers of Spanish-language content, Televisa has boosted its presence in the U.S. Latino market in recent years. In addition to an existing program license agreement with its stateside partner Univision, Televisa announced in January that it had formed a programming and development partnership with Lionsgate, which includes plans to create English-language content.
The pact came two years after Lionsgate joined forces with Televisa to create Pantelion, the U.S. theatrical distributor behind the Will Ferrell vehicle Casa de mi Padre. Pantelion acquires and produces feature films targeting Latino audiences.

Incentives Update: NEW NEW MEXICO FILM COMMISSIONER

NEW NEW MEXICO FILM COMMISSIONER

Nick Maniatis, former executive director of the New Mexico Independent Power Producers, has been named director of the New Mexico Film Office. (NM Independent Power is a lobbyist for electrical power, and not a film production company).

Maniatis was executive producer of "Cruel World," a film shot in New Mexico; he has worked on many film projects in the state and was an appointed board member of the Governor's Council on Film and Media Industries from 2002 to 2009. He also was a board member of the Digital Film Institute from 2003 to 2010.

The New Mexico program offers a refundable tax credit of 25% for all New Mexico labor and qualified expenses, plus 25% (subject to GRT and withholding tax) for out-of-state cast. There is a $50 million cap per year.

NEVADA PROGRAM FAILS TO PASS

The hoped for approval of legislation to provide a transferable tax credit of 25% (later reduced to 15%) failed to win approval. Legislation will be introduced again at the next session, two years from now. Meanwhile, the film commission is looking for other ways to encourage production in the state.

Netflix eyeing Latin America, Britain for next international launches..

While Wall Street eagerly awaits word on where Netflix will expand next overseas, the fast-growing home entertainment company has signaled its plans to Hollywood.

According to entertainment industry insiders, Netflix executives have said they plan to expand soon to Latin America -- with Mexico and Brazil considered particularly promising markets -- and Britain.

A spokesman for Netflix declined to comment on the company's plans abroad.

Netflix launched in Canada last September and expected to have as many as 900,000 subscribers there by the end of March. The company previously told investors that if growth in that country continued to be strong, it would expand into other foreign countries in the second half of 2011.

Investors and observers have been looking for clues as to where Netflix will next offer its online video service in order to gauge its global growth prospects.

Britain could pose a particular challenge, as it's the first country in which Netflix will face a direct competitor. LoveFilm, which in January was acquired by Amazon.com, offers a similar service there.

For much more on the challenges Netflix faces, including potential competitors, see the story in tomorrow's Times.
