Web piracy: Sites in Russia, China, Ukraine, Canada top MPAA list...

Websites registered in China, Russia, Ukraine and Canada continue to dominate the list of "most notorious" markets for distributing pirated movies and TV shows, an industry report shows.

The survey, compiled by the Motion Picture Assn. of America at the request of the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, ranked websites and other technologies used to distribute illegal copies of movies and TV show based on how much web traffic they generated, among other indicators.

The MPAA list includes peer-to-peer networks, Bit Torrent portals, infringing download and streaming hubs, linking websites and newsgroups, as well as physical markets located in the Ukraine, Australia, Canada, China, Indonesia, Ireland, Brazil, Russia, Thailand, Mexico and India.

"The rogue overseas marketplaces highlighted in the filing undermine the people who work hard to create the movies and TV shows audiences love, and jeopardize the billions of dollars they contribute to the U.S. economy," Chris Dodd, chairman of the MPAA said in a statement. "The MPAA commends the USTR's commitment to protect and enforce intellectual property rights abroad and, in so doing, protect U.S. jobs."

Among the top sites identified in the survey were: Extratorrent.com in the Ukraine, which had 16.1 million unique visitors in August, including features highlighting "the most pirate movies" and "first cams," which are camcordings of movies showing in theaters; and Russia-based Rutracker.org, a BitTorrent portal launched in 2010 that is one of the world's most visited sites, with 11.7 million unique visitors in August.

Also on the list were two sites from Canada: Kickass.to, which changed names after U.S. authorities seized its previous domain; and Torrentz.eu, one of the most popular BitTorrent websites on the Internet, which had 45.5 million visitors in August.

China also two websites on the list: Xunlei.com, which features a high speed file sharing system that distributes unauthorized copies of movies and TV shows; and QVOD, or Kuaibo.com, widely used by Chinese rogues linking sites.

"The criminals who profit from the most notorious markets through the world threaten the very heart of our industry and in doing so threaten the livelihoods of the people who give it life," wrote the MPAA's Michael O'Leary, the report's author. "These markets are an immediate threat to legitimate commerce, impairing legitimate markets' viability and curbing U.S. competitiveness."

Russia has suspended the import and use of an American GM corn following a study suggesting a link to breast cancer and organ damage.

Separately, the European Food Safety Authority(EFSA), has ordered its own review in to the research, which was conducted at a French university.

The decision by Russia could be followed by other nations in what would be a severe blow to the take-up of the controversial technology.

Historically, biotech companies have proved the safety of GM crops based on trials involving feeding rats for a period of 90 days.

However, experts at the University of Caen conducted an experiment running for the full lives of rats - two years.

The findings, which were peer reviewed by independent experts before being published in a respected scientific journal, found raised levels of breast cancer, liver and kidney damage.

The same trials also found evidence that consumption of minuscule amounts of a commonly used weedkiller, Roundup, was associated with a raised risk of cancer.

Both the GM corn, which carries the name NK603, and Roundup are the creation of US biotech company Monsanto.

Russia’s consumer rights watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, said today that it has suspended the import and use of the Monsanto GM corn.

Rospotrebnadzor said the country’s Institute of Nutrition has been asked to assess the validity of the study. 

It has also contacted the European Commission’s Directorate General for Health & Consumers to ask for the EU’s position on the corn’s safety.

Consumer scepticism in the UK and Europe means GM corn is not on supermarket shelves here, however it is fed to farm animals, including hens, pigs and dairy cows.

Last week Monsanto said it did not think the French study would affect its license to export the NK603 to Europe but would wait to hear from EFSA.

The company said: ‘Based on our initial review, we do not believe the study presents information that would justify any change in EFSA’s views on the safety of genetically modified corn products or alter their approval status for genetically modified imports.’ 

The biotech industry and university researchers involved in GM research have mounted a major PR campaign over the last year to win over sceptical consumers.

In the past week, pro-GM scientists have been lining up to undermine the French experiments and criticise the way they were conducted.

However, a number of independent academics have praised the French team’s work, describing it as the most thorough and extensive feeding trials involving GM to date.

Mustafa Djamgoz, the Professor of Cancer Biology, at Imperial College, London, said the findings relating to eating GM corn were a ‘surprise’.

Prof Djamgoz, who describes himself as a neutral on GM, said: ‘The results are significant. The experiments are, more or less, the best of their kind to date.’ 

However, he said that it is now important to ensure they are repeated with more animals by independent laboratories to confirm the outcome.

‘We are not scaremongering here. More research, including a repetition of this particular study are warranted,’ he said.

The professor said it will take two to three years to get a definitive answer.

New Russian Child-Protection Law Hits TV Channels...

Broadcasters are forced to make changes to their programming, including "The Simpsons" and "South Park."

MOSCOW -- A controversial child protection law that comes into force in Russia as of Sept.1 is to hit TV stations as they will no longer be able to air some of content previously intended for children before 11 p.m.

The new law specifically targets the depiction of violence, sex and characters consuming tobacco, alcohol and using profanity, prompting TV stations to reconsider their programming.
The TV channel 2x2, which specializes in imported cartoon series, plans to cut some violent parts from Itchy & Scratchy, "a cartoon within a cartoon" in The Simpsons, and to move the airings of South Park to time slots after 11 p.m., Lev Makarov, 2x2's general director, was quoted as saying by the Russian News Service.

Incidentally, four years ago, the channel came under attack from the authorities for allegedly "extremist" content of some of the South Park episodes it had broadcasted and even faced the revoking of it license, but the controversy eventually died down.

Meanwhile, some popular Russian cartoons could be found illegal under the new law, as well. The state-run television company VGTRK will have to air the popular Soviet-time cartoon series Nu, Pogodi! (I'll Get You) only after 11 p.m., the Ekho Moskvy FM station reported. In just about every scene of the series, one of the two main characters, Wolf, is shown smoking a cigarette.
"We have two options: to break the law or to show it late at night," Tatyana Tsyvareva, head of children and youth programming at VGTRK, was quoted as saying in the report.
The maximum punishment for companies for breaking the new law is stipulated to be suspension of operations for up to 90 days.

The company said in a statement that it had finalized the latest in a series of licensing deals with the majors and now is offering to its users 65,000 items of video content, including that licensed from 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney, Sony Pictures, Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures and NBC Universal.

"The reached agreements are an important step for the development of the legitimate video market in Russia and fighting piracy in the digital content industry," Oleg Tumanov, chairman of the board and managing director of ivi.ru, said in a statement. "The partnership with Hollywood's leading studios is opening up new opportunities and creating advantages for our users and for the sector in general."

In the near future, 30 out of 50 all-time box office champions are to be made available to ivi.ru users, the company said.

ivi.ru is Russia's leading online video service, with a market share of about 30 percent, according to the research group Romir Gallup International. It uses a combination of ad-sponsored, pay-per-view and subscription models. Recent box office hits are available to the service's users at 79 roubles ($2.7) per movie.

The country's general prosecutor's office has accused Andrei and Natalia Lopukhov, a Moscow-based married couple, of illegal online distribution of features and animated films through the web sites interfilm.ru and puzkarapuz.ru back in 2007 and 2008. The prosecutors claim that the damages caused by the Lopukhovs for their activities during nearly 18 months caused the damages of 38 billion roubles ($1.24 billion), which makes the case the biggest ever copyright lawsuit in Russia.
The films illegally distributed by the defendants include, among many others, Shrek the Third, Resident Evil: Extinction and 28 Weeks Later.

Among the companies whose movies were illegally distributed are 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Warner Bros., Disney Enterprises, Sony Pictures and Universal, as well as the domestic film producers Central Partnership, Riki, STV and Paradiz.
"We don't disclose the figure [of our claims], but our calculations were based on the values of relevant deals with [legitimate] video services," Zlata Polishchuk, executive vice president of Central Partnership, which also represents Paramount in the Russian market, told The Hollywood Reporter.
The plaintiffs don't expect that the damages could be actually paid to them but hope that the case could create an important precedent that would help to fight online piracy in the future.
"A lawsuit of such a high value has been filed for the first time here," Alexei Ryazantsev, general director of Karo Premier, which represents Warner Bros. in the Russian market, told THR. "It is unlikely that the damages will be paid, but the case could really scare off some people and dissuade them from pirate activities in the future."
A date for court hearings has not yet been set.
