Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves in the world. It was once so rich that Concorde used to fly from Caracas to Paris. But in the last three years its economy has collapsed. Hunger has gripped the nation for years. Now, it’s killing people and animals that are dying of starvation. The Venezuelan government knows, but won’t admit it!!! Four in five Venezuelans live in poverty. People queue for hours to buy food. Much of the time they go without. People are also dying from a lack of medicines. Inflation is at 82,766% and there are warnings it could exceed one million per cent by the end of this year. Venezuelans are trying to get out. The UN says 2.3 million people have fled the country - 7% of the population.

Oscar's shortlist of Doc shorts

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today its shortlist for the field of Documentary Short Subject.

Those in the running for the 85th Annual Academy Awards include the following eight films:

The Education of Mohammad Hussein, Loki Films

Inocente, Shine Global, Inc.

Kings Point, Kings Point Documentary, Inc.

Mondays at Racine, Cynthia Wade Productions

Open Heart, Urban Landscapes Inc.

ParaÍso, The Strangebird Company

The Perfect Fit, SDI Productions Ltd.

Redemption, Downtown Docs

Three to five of them will be nominated when the Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 10.

Registration begins March 1, 2011 and will continue through 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2011. Interested filmmakers are encouraged to either register in advance of the festival by sending an email to Olympus48@vailfilmfestival.org, or register in person at the festival Will Call Office beginning Tuesday, March 29, 2011. Signups may be limited by equipment availability, so sign up sooner rather than later!

WHAT DO YOU WIN
The winning team of filmmakers (limit five per team) will receive a cash prize of $5,000, an Olympus PEN interchangeable lens camera kit, VIP passes to the 2012 Vail Film Festival and a private meet-and-greet with an award-winning Hollywood filmmaker.

Short Film Tips

FOLLOW THE RULES – of the competition. Read the rules once and print them out and read them again. Make sure your film meets all of the criteria.

BE CREATIVE – There is nothing better received than originality. Stick to your gut feeling and dare to be different.

GET YOUR POINT ACROSS – The script and the concept are two major components of a great film .
CONSIDER THE STYLE AND MANNER – you want to present. If your personality is comedic and energetic produce a short comedy. If your life is filled with drama, make your short dramatic.

ENTER THE CONTEST – As silly as this might sound, it’s not ok just to have a great idea and never implement it. Make sure you take advantage of opportunities that allow you to express your creativity and get paid for it!

Industry News: Docs needed for International TV Distribution

Hello Filmmakers,

We are having trouble finding good film this year,
maybe you have some suggestions.

We are looking for completed, well made and
compelling Documentary Films and TV shows to
bring to market at Mipcom for International TV sales.

We are setting meetings with BBC, TV5 and over 100
other channels.

We are completing our print catalog this week,
so if you are interested please contact me right away.

While we are open to types of films, we are especially
interested in:

26min - 52 minute - 90 minute programs (+ or - 3 min)

with international interest and more than just talking heads.
