Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves in the world. It was once so rich that Concorde used to fly from Caracas to Paris. But in the last three years its economy has collapsed. Hunger has gripped the nation for years. Now, it’s killing people and animals that are dying of starvation. The Venezuelan government knows, but won’t admit it!!! Four in five Venezuelans live in poverty. People queue for hours to buy food. Much of the time they go without. People are also dying from a lack of medicines. Inflation is at 82,766% and there are warnings it could exceed one million per cent by the end of this year. Venezuelans are trying to get out. The UN says 2.3 million people have fled the country - 7% of the population.

E.U. Commission Re-ups And Expands Film Subsidies...

E.U. Commission Re-ups And Expands Film Subsidies...

The E.U. has renewed its Communication Cinema policy comprising regulations for film subsidies

PARIS— European industry players have gotten their happy ending: The European Commission has finally reupped film subsidies and preserved territorial obligations following 18 months of intense lobbying from film boards and guilds.

Regrouped under the Communication Cinema policy, the regulations were first created in 2011 to level out state aids across Europe and prevent the subsidy race between countries.

The new policy still allows producers to raise up to 50% of their film budgets via subsidies, and it now considers eligible spendings related to script-writing, development, film distribution and film promotion (including film festivals). The previous text was only taking production costs into account.

"Aid to production alone risks stimulating the supply of audiovisual content without ensuring that the resulting audiovisual work is properly distributed and promoted," stated the E.U.. "It is therefore appropriate that aid may cover all aspects of film creation, from story concept to delivery to the audience. "

Another positive change, the aid is upped to 60% of the budgets for pan-European co-productions. Meanwhile, producers of smaller-budgeted films will be able to raise up to 80% of their budgets via subsidies.

A major victory for European industryites, the E.U. Commission opted to maintain territorial spending obligations – capped at 80% of the production budget — after initially claiming its intention to bent restrictions on the origin of goods, services or workers used by a production.

Member states will be able to require that producers spend the equivalent of 160% of the aid in their territory.

Led by France, the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain, E.U. states inject an estimated 3 billion Euros ($4 million) per year in film support, including $2.7 billion in grants and soft loans, and $1.3 billion in tax incentives. Film productions draw approximately $2.7 billion per year in state aid.

The stakes were high for the Euro film industry : At present, Europe's tax rebate programs generate an estimated $939 million every year ; and 80% of that amount is injected in European films, according to Patrick Lamassoure at Film France Commission.

While the E.U. acknowledged the fact that vidgames "may represent one of the fastest-growing form of mass media in the coming years," it didn't include them in the Communication Cinema policy.

"Not all games necessarily qualify as audiovisual works or cultural products. Therefore, the rules designed for film production cannot apply automatically to games," stated the E.U. Commission, adding that games which serve a cultural or educational purpose may be eligible to receive E.U. fundings.

The country's three main Dutch-language networks have begun testing the catch-up portal called Rumble.

The country's three main Dutch-language networks have begun testing the catch-up portal called Rumble.

COLOGNE, Germany - The three largest Dutch-language networks in Belgium: VRT, VMMa and SBS Belgium, have joined forces to launch a local catch-up TV portal similar to Hulu.

Netflix Touts 1 Million Subscriber Milestone in U.K., Ireland
Called Rumble, the service would make the networks' programs available online and to tablets and smartphones for up to three days after their initial television broadcast. According to an article in Belgium's De Standard newspaper, the three channels are currently testing the service. VRT is a public broadcaster while VMMa and SBS are both commercial channels.
A similar attempt to launch a Hulu-style platform in Germany, Europe's largest television market, failed when the courts rejected plans by leading commercial broadcast groups RTL and ProSiebenSat.1. The regulatory watchdogs argued the service would extend the two companies' near-duopoly in the German TV ad market. Germany's public broadcasters have proposed their own independent catch-up service, called Gold.
The market in online TV services is heating up in Europe. Netflix this week announced that its new service in the U.K. and Ireland crossed the 1 million subscriber milestone within seven months of launch, the fastest growth for Netflix in any territory it operates in. Netflix also recently announced plans to launch its service across Scandinavia.

Gamescom Video Convention Breaks Attendance Record...

The European gaming confab drew 275,000 which represented an 8 percent increase in visitors over last year's event.

COLOGNE, Germany -- Europe's number one video gaming confab, Gamescom, hit a new attendance record this year, with 275,000 visitors making the trip to Cologne to check out the latest titles and trends in the gaming industry.

The figure represents an 8 percent jump on attendance in 2010 but remains just slightly behind Korea's G-Star convention, which last year drew 280,000 fans. With 550 companies represented, however, the Gamescom defended its title as the gaming world's largest industry event.

The surge in fan numbers temporarily overwhelmed Gamescom organizers, who closed the entrance to the event for a short time on Saturday as the crowd threatened to turn into a crushing mass. If Gamescom is to build on the momentum it has shown in its third year in Cologne, the confab will have to find a way to better accommodate its swelling fan base.
The 2012 Gamescom runs Aug. 15 -19, 2012.

German Cable Companies Back in Black...

Little sign of cord cutting as Kabel Deutschland and Kabel BW report strong first half results.

COLOGNE, Germany - Cord cutting? What cord cutting? First half results from Germany's Kabel Deutschland (KDG) and Kabel BW provided further evidence that, in this territory at least, cable remains king. Both companies booked strong revenue and profit growth. Sales at market leader KDG were up 5.8 per cent year-on-year to $592 million (€412.1 million) and the company turned its $3.5 million loss in H1 2010 into a $12 million (€8.5 million) net profit. While the total number of KDG customers slipped slightly, to 8.7 million from more than 8.8 million a year ago, more Germans signed up for KDG's broadband, telephony and pay-TV services, boosting revenue overall.

John Malone's Liberty Global Buys German Kabel BW for $4.5 Billion.

It was a similar story at regional cable operator Kabel BW, which saw revenues jump 10.7 per cent to $431 million (€300.2 million) and pre-tax profits top $144 million (€100.4 million), a 28.4 per cent increase. Again it was premium services driving the numbers, as pay-TV subscriptions jumped 39 per cent to 324,000 and broadband/telephony subscriptions were up about 25 per cent to 740,000. Kabel BW even managed to increase its total customer base, adding 48,000 new subscribers to make nearly 2.4 million overall. John Malone's Liberty Global bought Kabel BW in a $4.5 billion deal earlier this year.

Industry News: German Film Fund Brings in Nearly $500 million in 2010...

January 20, 2011

BERLIN – Germany's tax-incentive for feature film shoots translated into nearly half a billion dollars in production in 2010.

The German Federal Film Fund, the DFFF, handed out $80 million (€59 million) in tax incentives last year, backing 80 features including Paul W.S. Anderson's The Three Musketeers reboot starring Orlando Bloom, Milla Jovovich and Christoph Waltz; the Freudian drama A Dangerous Method from David Cronenberg with Viggo Mortensen and Keira Knightleyand the Liam Neeson thriller Unknown.

According to the DFFF's calculation, that investment paid off to the tune of $458 million (€340 million) in production outlays in Germany last year.

Since its start four years ago, the DFFF has backed a total of 416 productions with a total of $316 million in incentives. The result has been an injection of nearly $2 billion into the German production industry. The DFFF system provides an up front tax rebate of between 16%-20% of a project's production costs in Germany.
