Branson's Complex Migraine On-Air Sheds Light on Private Pain of 28 Million

CBS correspondent Serene Branson broke her silence and disclosed that it was complex migraine symptoms that turned her broadcast to gibberish after the Grammys. With the migraine behind her, she is now looking to get back to work, in her words, "...I'm ready to be telling the story and not be the story."
Many viewers who saw Branson's speech fumble speculated that Branson had suffered a stroke on air, and indeed some of her symptoms fueled that theory. Branson not only had difficulty speaking, the migraine also caused numbness on her right side, a classic stroke symptom. Branson was experiencing a throbbing headache before she went on air and found herself unable to speak coherently.
Doctors have abandoned the traditional division of migraines into types including classic, common or complicated as many migraines overlap symptoms of multiple types. The use of the name complex migraine to describe what happened to Branson is thus a description of her symptoms rather than of the underlying condition causing them.
What Branson experienced so publicly after the Grammys mirrors the private pain of some 28 million American migraine sufferers. A WebMD editor wrote an account of how she felt when she suffered complex migraines similar to Branson's beginning at age 11. She described writing words on a paper in class. The words seemed normal to her at the time, but she later realized they descended diagonally down the page, not horizontally across the page. On another occasion, she attempted to take a test while suffering a complex migraine but found herself unable to read the questions. She compared how she felt to being drunk.
Numerous sufferers of complex migraines have turned to the internet to share their frustrations and offer each other support. Throughout the accounts on medhelp.org, there is synchronicity in descriptions of diagnostic limitations. Many patients have difficulty finding out whether they've suffered a transient ischemic attack, precursor to a stroke, a stroke or a migraine. The symptoms are similar: blurred vision, dizziness, numbness, confusion, distorted speech.
One complex migraine sufferer, identifying herself as amazon-banshee, described the pain this way: "it feels as though my head is in labor."
The cause of complex migraines is not understood, but researchers have identified common triggers for those prone to the condition. Foods with tyramine and tannins are suspected triggers as are cigarette smoke and alcohol. Schedule changes, barometric pressure variations, exercise and medications such as pain relievers also can trigger complex migraine symptoms.
