This might be a hair off topic but wanted to post a warning.
I was contacted by a Bryan Phillips who said he was looking to hire a number of Producers/Videographers all over the country to shoot models for his corporate sponsors. I do not know if it was a posting I responded to or he found me.
I received a FedEx envelope from a Ryan Doudican out of Anaheim CA. In it was a check made out to me from a company called American Commercial Lines. It turns out American Commercial Lines is one of Americas largest shipping companies but the check is a fraud. Luckily I verified everything before I was going to make any deposits because I had red flags waving from emails I had with this Phillips guy. He wanted me to book a specific studio back down in Anaheim CA and send them half the funds from this check. That smelled fowl to me.
Just want to inform all of you that we're being preyed on and be careful since we're all anxious to pick up work.
I took the check, a print out of the FedEx tracking, copies of all the emails, and Bryan's phone number to my local Police to file a fraud. The police turned me down because I had not deposited the check or done any work for him so I wasn't a "victim" yet.
Then I called American Commercial Lines figuring they would like to find out about this crime against them. I had a very nice conversation with their finance department who told me this happens to them from time to time because they are such a huge corporation. Bank of America protects them and we the consumer will pay the price in high bank fees to cover any loss the banks take.
This gentleman told me the first time it happened he tried to pursue the fraud with the FBI. The FBI told him these criminals move to fast around the country staying at hotels and have very good printers to reproduce proper looking checks. They can't catch these people so it all falls back on any of us who end up depositing the check, being hit by the bank for NSF fees and being out funds if you did book any studio time, gear, or anything else the instructions suggest you do.
Be proactive and carefully check funds from unknown potential clients. Be very wary of any check coming from a different source.
