Historic Change as Women Directors Leave Mark at Cannes
It's a cornucopia of female directing talent at the Cannes Film Festival 2011 after a year in which protests were loud over the fact that women were entirely absent from the competition.
This year marks an historic change: no fewer than four women directors are screening films in the competition this year -- a record, according to festival organizers -- and many more are competing in other categories.
It's hard to say if the festival reacted to last year's protest or if last year was a dry spell in a changed era of equality. Certainly it can't hurt that Kathryn Bigelow won the Oscar in 2010, breaking that particular glass ceiling.
Included in the main competition this year are:
* Britain's Lynne Ramsay, who directed "We Need to Talk About Kevin," which debuted on Thursday; it is a dark vision of American parenthood in which Tilda Swinton plays a mother riven with pain and guilt over her teenage son's violent actions. (It does not yet have U.S. distribution.)
* Australia's Julia Leigh (mentored by Jane Campion) brought "Sleeping Beauty' to the festival -- which Sasha Stone on TheWrap called "a wretched, stifling" fairy tale [1]– about beautiful women hired to be put to sleep by men and sexually used while unconscious.

* "Polisse" is an ambitious, multi-character police story by the French filmmaker who goes by the single name of Maiwenn (pictured, right). The film is set in the juvenile protection unit and chronicles the daily grind for cops dealing with child molesters, underage pickpockets and abusive parents. Maiwenn co-wrote and directed the film -- spending time immersed in a police unit to learn the subject -- in addition to playing a photographer in the story.
* "Hanezu" by Japanese filmmaker Naomi Kawase is a study of comparing the tradition of valuing the passage of time. Kawase wrote, directed, photographed and edited the film.
And these are far from the only films by women in the festival. "And Now Where Are We Going?" (`Et Maintenant On Va Ou") by Nadine Labaki is about a group of Lebanese women who try to ease religious tensions between Christians and Muslims in their village.
Jodie Foster's "The Beaver" is screening out of competition, "The Big Fix" by Rebecca and Josh Tickell is part of the festival as is "Return," by first-time filmmaker Liza Johnson, about a woman soldier (Linda Cardellini) returning to small-town life in Ohio and her husband (played by Michael Shannon).
"I was interested in doing a story set in a town like the one I came from," said Johnson, in an interview. "It seemed interesting, important, and under-told. The story that gets told most is expulsive – about men's rage. But the intimate ways in which people across a new gap is not often told." (See video)
"The Slut," screening in the Director's Fortnight section, is Israeli filmmaker Hagar Ben-Asher's poetic take on promiscuity. She wrote, directed and stars in the film as a woman living on an agricultural commune who services the men of the community as she raises chickens, and two daughters. The film has very little dialogue, but conveys emotion and the complexity of relations that sex engenders.
Whether women directors add a different dimension to the panorama of filmmaking is a matter of debate (I believe they do – more intimate stories, more stories that are
interested in and understand female characters).
I asked Maiwenn -- with striking looks and a mane of brown hair -- about the number of women directors this year, and she took offense at the notion that it was a reaction to last year's absence. (Which yielded an online petition [3]that raised 1,000 signatures in protest.)
Festival director "Thierry Fremaux and the committee love cinema and women enough to judge if films have their place in Cannes, directed by men or women," she said combatively at Friday's press conference. "It would be deplorable to create a quota of women to fill. I'm sure my film was taken it's because it's good not because I'm a woman.
But at the same time, Maiwenn noted that directing "is a masculine profession."
"It's very hard on the set," she conceded. "It's a masculine profession, about taking things in charge. That's the difficulty. And we are up against misogynistic financiers."
Johnson could connect with that sentiment. She finally found financing from Fork Films, a company run by Abigail Disney, a filmmaker and philanthropist interested in both peace-related and women's issues (bullseye!).
But that was before Johnson heard a lot of `Nos.' "I've had people say, `We're already doing a film with a woman this year,'" as a reason to turn her down, Johnson recalled.
There's still work to do.

Shakira mulls possibility of Arabic-language record

While plenty of her pop contemporaries struggle to express themselves coherently in one language, Shakira has long composed her idiosyncratic pop ditties in both her native Spanish and her English second tongue. Now she's just showing off, preparing to expand her songwriting fluency to another element of her expansive cultural make-up.
Though she was born and raised in Colombia, Shakira's father is an American of Lebanese descent and she credits her Arabic background for the Middle Eastern influence in her tunes and her propensity for belly-dancing on stage. According to Contactmusic, she is considering brushing up on her already-impressive language skills to make a more complete tribute to her heritage.
"It would be a challenge to do an album in Arabic, but I would first have to learn Arabic," she explains. "I am completely open to that experience -- at some point I would love that to happen in my life." At the moment, Shakira's Arabic extends as far as saying "ateeni boosa" which apparently translates as "can I have a kiss?"
A more tricky proposition is coming up with the Arabic for "lucky that my breasts are small and humble / So you don't confuse them, with mountains".
Shakira played her first concert in Arabic speaking Morocco on Saturday (28.05.11), closing the Mawazine World Rhythms Festival.
The 'Underneath Your Clothes' star has also previously been approached by Bollywood film makers about starring in an Indian production, which would likely see her singing in Hindi.

The Bilingual Advantage

A cognitive neuroscientist, Ellen Bialystok has spent almost 40 years learning about how bilingualism sharpens the mind. Her good news: Among other benefits, the regular use of two languages appears to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease symptoms. Dr. Bialystok, 62, a distinguished research professor of psychology at York University in Toronto, was awarded a $100,000 Killam Prize last year for her contributions to social science. We spoke for two hours in a Washington hotel room in February and again, more recently, by telephone. An edited version of the two conversations follows.
Q. How did you begin studying bilingualism?
A. You know, I didn’t start trying to find out whether bilingualism was bad or good. I did my doctorate in psychology: on how children acquire language. When I finished graduate school, in 1976, there was a job shortage in Canada for Ph.D.’s. The only position I found was with a research project studying second language acquisition in school children. It wasn’t my area. But it was close enough.
As a psychologist, I brought neuroscience questions to the study, like “How does the acquisition of a second language change thought?” It was these types of questions that naturally led to the bilingualism research. The way research works is, it takes you down a road. You then follow that road.
Q. So what exactly did you find on this unexpected road?
A. As we did our research, you could see there was a big difference in the way monolingual and bilingual children processed language. We found that if you gave 5- and 6-year-olds language problems to solve, monolingual and bilingual children knew, pretty much, the same amount of language.
But on one question, there was a difference. We asked all the children if a certain illogical sentence was grammatically correct: “Apples grow on noses.” The monolingual children couldn’t answer. They’d say, “That’s silly” and they’d stall. But the bilingual children would say, in their own words, “It’s silly, but it’s grammatically correct.” The bilinguals, we found, manifested a cognitive system with the ability to attend to important information and ignore the less important.
Q. How does this work — do you understand it?
A. Yes. There’s a system in your brain, the executive control system. It’s a general manager. Its job is to keep you focused on what is relevant, while ignoring distractions. It’s what makes it possible for you to hold two different things in your mind at one time and switch between them.
If you have two languages and you use them regularly, the way the brain’s networks work is that every time you speak, both languages pop up and the executive control system has to sort through everything and attend to what’s relevant in the moment. Therefore the bilinguals use that system more, and it’s that regular use that makes that system more efficient.
Q. One of your most startling recent findings is that bilingualism helps forestall the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. How did you come to learn this?
A. We did two kinds of studies. In the first, published in 2004, we found that normally aging bilinguals had better cognitive functioning than normally aging monolinguals. Bilingual older adults performed better than monolingual older adults on executive control tasks. That was very impressive because it didn’t have to be that way. It could have turned out that everybody just lost function equally as they got older.
That evidence made us look at people who didn’t have normal cognitive function. In our next studies , we looked at the medical records of 400 Alzheimer’s patients. On average, the bilinguals showed Alzheimer’s symptoms five or six years later than those who spoke only one language. This didn’t mean that the bilinguals didn’t have Alzheimer’s. It meant that as the disease took root in their brains, they were able to continue functioning at a higher level. They could cope with the disease for longer.
Q. So high school French is useful for something other than ordering a special meal in a restaurant?
A. Sorry, no. You have to use both languages all the time. You won’t get the bilingual benefit from occasional use.
Q. One would think bilingualism might help with multitasking — does it?
A. Yes, multitasking is one of the things the executive control system handles. We wondered, “Are bilinguals better at multitasking?” So we put monolinguals and bilinguals into a driving simulator. Through headphones, we gave them extra tasks to do — as if they were driving and talking on cellphones. We then measured how much worse their driving got. Now, everybody’s driving got worse. But the bilinguals, their driving didn’t drop as much. Because adding on another task while trying to concentrate on a driving problem, that’s what bilingualism gives you — though I wouldn’t advise doing this.
Q. Has the development of new neuroimaging technologies changed your work?
A. Tremendously. It used to be that we could only see what parts of the brain lit up when our subjects performed different tasks. Now, with the new technologies, we can see how all the brain structures work in accord with each other.
In terms of monolinguals and bilinguals, the big thing that we have found is that the connections are different. So we have monolinguals solving a problem, and they use X systems, but when bilinguals solve the same problem, they use others. One of the things we’ve seen is that on certain kinds of even nonverbal tests, bilingual people are faster. Why? Well, when we look in their brains through neuroimaging, it appears like they’re using a different kind of a network that might include language centers to solve a completely nonverbal problem. Their whole brain appears to rewire because of bilingualism.
Q. Bilingualism used to be considered a negative thing — at least in the United States. Is it still?
A. Until about the 1960s, the conventional wisdom was that bilingualism was a disadvantage. Some of this was xenophobia. Thanks to science, we now know that the opposite is true.
Q. Many immigrants choose not to teach their children their native language. Is this a good thing?
A. I’m asked about this all the time. People e-mail me and say, “I’m getting married to someone from another culture, what should we do with the children?” I always say, “You’re sitting on a potential gift.”
There are two major reasons people should pass their heritage language onto children. First, it connects children to their ancestors. The second is my research: Bilingualism is good for you. It makes brains stronger. It is brain exercise.
Q. Are you bilingual?
A. Well, I have fully bilingual grandchildren because my daughter married a Frenchman. When my daughter announced her engagement to her French boyfriend, we were a little surprised. It’s always astonishing when your child announces she’s getting married. She said, “But Mom, it’ll be fine, our children will be bilingual!”

2011 Student Academy Awards® competition

LOS ANGELES, USA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is now accepting entries for the 2011 Student Academy Awards competition. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, along with cash prizes, may be awarded to U.S. student filmmakers in the following categories: Alternative, Animation, Narrative and Documentary.
The Academy also announced a change in its foreign film category. Since 1981, the Academy has recognized student filmmakers from abroad by presenting a single Honorary Foreign Film award. This year, up to three foreign films will be honored with medals, the same as in the individual U.S. categories.
The U.S. competition is open to all full-time college and university students whose films are made within the curricular structure of a film program or class at their respective schools. The application for entry is available online at: http://www.oscars.org/saa. U.S. entries must be submitted by Friday, April 1, 2011.
The foreign film competition is also open to full-time college and university students, however, in this category entries are accepted only from schools that are members of the International Film Organization known as CILECT, and located outside the borders of the United States. The deadline to submit a foreign student film for consideration is Friday, March 25, 2011.
On Saturday, June 11, 2011, the 38th Annual Student Academy Awards presentation will be held at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Earlier this year, at the 82nd Academy Awards, former Student Academy Award winner Pete Docter took home the Oscar® for Best Animated Feature Film for “Up.” Gregg Helvey, a 2009 Student Academy Award winner, was a nominee in the Live Action Short Film category for “Kavi.”

Vivre avec un traducteur indépendant, mode d’emploi
Aujourd’hui, je vous propose un billet destiné à ceux qui ont croisé sur leur chemin un traducteur indépendant et qui ont décidé de vivre avec.
Epoux, épouses, amoureux, amoureuses, co-signataires de PACS, c’est à vous que je m’adresse. Voici un petit guide pour mieux comprendre le mode de vie et les besoins de l’élu de votre coeur. Tout d’abord, il est important de signaler que ce billet traitera seulement du traducteur indépendant et non du traducteur salarié, car le traducteur à son compte (pigiste, comme on dit au Québec) est une espèce à part. Contrairement à son homologue salarié, l’indépendant est un loup constamment à l’affût d’une opportunité de travail, mais nous y reviendrons…
Mode de vie
Quand vous partez au travail, il est assis à son bureau devant son ordinateur. Quand vous revenez du travail, il est toujours assis devant son ordinateur. Alors que vous avez enchaîné réunions, travail et déjeuner d’affaires, votre conjoint vous donne l’impression que le temps s’est arrêté chez vous. Ce n’est pas le cas. Seulement, il faut savoir que le traducteur dispose d’une étonnante capacité à passer de nombreuses heures dans la même position. D’ailleurs, son environnement est complètement optimisé en fonction de ses besoins: clavier et souris super-ergonomiques, écran géant configuré de manière à ne pas fatiguer les yeux, fauteuil permettant de garder une bonne posture, ordinateur puissant et suréquipé… Le traducteur a su aménager sa tanière pour y passer de longues heures. Et justement comment occupe-t-il ces longues heures?
Une fois que vous avez fermé la porte, votre cher et tendre va accomplir le premier geste de sa journée de travail: faire du thé/du café (rayez la mention inutile). Ensuite, sa fidèle tasse près de lui, il s’assoit à son bureau et commence par lire ses e-mails, puis passe en revue ses abonnements RSS, ses journaux favoris, sa timeline Twitter, etc. Cela peut paraître paradoxal, mais pour quelqu’un qui sort peu de chez lui, le traducteur est souvent très bien informé de ce qui se passe à l’extérieur. Ne vous y trompez pas! Ce n’est pas parce qu’elle est capable de vous raconter heure par heure le sommet de Davos ou la négociation de la loi des finances 2011 que la prunelle de vos yeux n’a rien fait de sa journée, bien au contraire. Le traducteur est un individu multitâche capable d’écouter de la musique, de lire les mises à jour de son compte Twitter, tout en négociant son prochain contrat et en avançant dans sa traduction en cours, le tout en gardant à la main sa tasse caféinée. Une simple question d’habitude!
Un travailleur continuel, le traducteur? Heureusement, non. Il a également des loisirs et une vie sociale
Loisirs
Si vous ne deviez retenir qu’une chose sur ce spécimen qu’est le traducteur indépendant, c’est que c’est une personne avide de culture. Quoi de plus normal, quand on passe l’essentiel de sa journée à se documenter pour mieux traduire? Ainsi, même dans ses loisirs, le traducteur a tendance à être un geek. Qu’il pratique le volley-ball, la danse orientale, qu’il joue au backgammon ou se passionne pour le scrapbooking, le traducteur s’est documenté sur l’activité qui l’occupe. L’amateur de cuisine sera capable de vous donner la date à laquelle est sorti le premier robot Kenwood, le skieur patenté est naturellement au courant des palmarès de toutes les compétitions des cinq dernières années, et je ne vous parle même pas du cinéphile! Le pire, c’est peut-être de voir avec quelle facilité l’astre de votre vie a réussi à s’approprier ces connaissances, comme si c’était une évidence: « ben quoi, tu savais pas que le mascara c’était de la poudre d’antimoine au départ? » dira l’adepte de cosmétiques, prête à enseigner l’histoire du maquillage aux vendeuses de Sephora.
Vie sociale
Fort heureusement, le traducteur a quand même une vie sociale, ou plutôt même deux. D’abord, il y a vos proches, les amis et la famille du couple. Si ce sont des connaissances de longue date, ils sont souvent habitués aux comportements étranges du traducteur et savent qu’il est capable de raconter l’histoire de la galette des rois dans les différentes régions de France (ou du monde) à toute la famille réunie pour l’épiphanie ou qu’il est le seul à emmener un ordinateur en vacances pour faire quelques traductions quand les autres font la sieste… Si ce sont des connaissances récentes, le traducteur se montrera souvent à l’écoute des autres. Seulement, quand vous, vous avez passé une semaine entière avec des collègues que nous ne voudriez surtout pas croiser en plus le weekend, le traducteur, lui, n’a vu personne. Certes, il n’a pas cessé d’interagir virtuellement avec des gens. Comprenez-le, pouvoir retrouver des gens qui vivent comme lui, pour parler d’un sujet qui les intéresse tous (qui a dit qui n’intéresse qu’eux?), c’est un peu comme aller à Disneyland Et le plus beau, c’est de voir avec quel enthousiasme il essaiera de vous convaincre de l’importance de la dernière réforme grammaticale ou d’aller voir un film tchèque sous-titré en allemand. Tout d’abord, il est important de signaler que ce billet traitera seulement du traducteur indépendant et non du traducteur salarié, car le traducteur à son compte (pigiste, comme on dit au Québec) est une espèce à part. Contrairement à son homologue salarié, l’indépendant est un loup constamment à l’affût d’une opportunité de travail, mais nous y reviendrons…
Mode de vie
Quand vous partez au travail, il est assis à son bureau devant son ordinateur. Quand vous revenez du travail, il est toujours assis devant son ordinateur. Alors que vous avez enchaîné réunions, travail et déjeuner d’affaires, votre conjoint vous donne l’impression que le temps s’est arrêté chez vous. Ce n’est pas le cas. Seulement, il faut savoir que le traducteur dispose d’une étonnante capacité à passer de nombreuses heures dans la même position. D’ailleurs, son environnement est complètement optimisé en fonction de ses besoins: clavier et souris super-ergonomiques, écran géant configuré de manière à ne pas fatiguer les yeux, fauteuil permettant de garder une bonne posture, ordinateur puissant et suréquipé… Le traducteur a su aménager sa tanière pour y passer de longues heures. Et justement comment occupe-t-il ces longues heures?
Une fois que vous avez fermé la porte, votre cher et tendre va accomplir le premier geste de sa journée de travail: faire du thé/du café (rayez la mention inutile). Ensuite, sa fidèle tasse près de lui, il s’assoit à son bureau et commence par lire ses e-mails, puis passe en revue ses abonnements RSS, ses journaux favoris, sa timeline Twitter, etc. Cela peut paraître paradoxal, mais pour quelqu’un qui sort peu de chez lui, le traducteur est souvent très bien informé de ce qui se passe à l’extérieur. Ne vous y trompez pas! Ce n’est pas parce qu’elle est capable de vous raconter heure par heure le sommet de Davos ou la négociation de la loi des finances 2011 que la prunelle de vos yeux n’a rien fait de sa journée, bien au contraire. Le traducteur est un individu multitâche capable d’écouter de la musique, de lire les mises à jour de son compte Twitter, tout en négociant son prochain contrat et en avançant dans sa traduction en cours, le tout en gardant à la main sa tasse caféinée. Une simple question d’habitude!

Loisirs
Si vous ne deviez retenir qu’une chose sur ce spécimen qu’est le traducteur indépendant, c’est que c’est une personne avide de culture. Quoi de plus normal, quand on passe l’essentiel de sa journée à se documenter pour mieux traduire? Ainsi, même dans ses loisirs, le traducteur a tendance à être un geek. Qu’il pratique le volley-ball, la danse orientale, qu’il joue au backgammon ou se passionne pour le scrapbooking, le traducteur s’est documenté sur l’activité qui l’occupe. L’amateur de cuisine sera capable de vous donner la date à laquelle est sorti le premier robot Kenwood, le skieur patenté est naturellement au courant des palmarès de toutes les compétitions des cinq dernières années, et je ne vous parle même pas du cinéphile! Le pire, c’est peut-être de voir avec quelle facilité l’astre de votre vie a réussi à s’approprier ces connaissances, comme si c’était une évidence: « ben quoi, tu savais pas que le mascara c’était de la poudre d’antimoine au départ? » dira l’adepte de cosmétiques, prête à enseigner l’histoire du maquillage aux vendeuses de Sephora.
Vie sociale
Fort heureusement, le traducteur a quand même une vie sociale, ou plutôt même deux. D’abord, il y a vos proches, les amis et la famille du couple. Si ce sont des connaissances de longue date, ils sont souvent habitués aux comportements étranges du traducteur et savent qu’il est capable de raconter l’histoire de la galette des rois dans les différentes régions de France (ou du monde) à toute la famille réunie pour l’épiphanie ou qu’il est le seul à emmener un ordinateur en vacances pour faire quelques traductions quand les autres font la sieste… Si ce sont des connaissances récentes, le traducteur se montrera souvent à l’écoute des autres. Today’s post is for all the men and women out there who have crossed paths with a freelance translator…and have decided to live with him or her. Husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, civil union partners—I am talking to you. This guide will help you understand the lifestyle and needs of your significant other.
First of all, let me remind you that I’m referring to freelance translators—not in-house ones. Self-employed translators are an entirely different breed, always on the prowl, ready to pounce on any possible lead. (We’ll get back to this later.)
Lifestyle
When you head out for work, the translator is sitting at the desk, staring at the computer. When you get back from work, the translator is sitting at the desk, staring at the computer.
While you’ve been going from meeting to business lunch to getting work done, time has stood still for the freelance translator.
No, this is not true. As a matter of fact, the freelance translator has a remarkable ability to hold the same posture for hours on end.
Look at his or her work area—the keyboard and mouse are designed for good ergonomics. The large monitor is set up to prevent eye fatigue. The armchair keeps the translator’s back straight. The computer is powerful and has endless features. The freelance translator has done everything to make work as comfortable as possible.
What does your freelance translator actually do all day?
Once you are out the door, your sweetheart executes the task which sets the workday in motion: make tea/coffee. (Check the appropriate box.) Next, the translator sits down, hot drink within arm’s reach, and proceeds to read e-mail, RSS subscriptions, favourite newspapers, the Twitter timeline, and so forth. As paradoxical as it sounds, the work-at-home freelance translator is often very informed about the happenings of the outside world.
But do not make the mistake of thinking that just because the freelance translator can tell you what goes on hour-by-hour at Davos or about the debate on new finance-related legislation, your better half has accomplished nothing.
Au contraire. The translator is an advanced multitasker who can listen to music, catch up on tweets, negotiate contracts, make progress on the current assignment, all while sipping on a caffeinated hot drink. All from doing that day-in and day-out!
Are translators workaholics? Fortunately, no. The translator also has hobbies and a social life.
Leisure time
If you can only remember one characteristic of the freelance translator species, take this: this individual is hungry for culture. What would be more unsurprising for a person who spends all day doing work-related research? The translator often remains, even outside of working hours, a veritable geek.
Whether we’re talking about volleyball, oriental dance, backgammon, or scrapbooking, the translator has done all the necessary research on the chosen activity. The amateur chef can tell you when the first Kenwood mixer came out. The hard-core skier can list names of world champions from the past five years. And don’t get me started on the film buff!
The worst of it all: the freelance translator talks as if all these facts were common knowledge. “You did know that mascara come from antimony-based powder, didn’t you?” says the freelance translator who likes cosmetics, ready to talk history to the ladies at Sephora.
Social life
Fortunately, the translator has a social life. Correction: two of them. First comes friends and famiy. Friends who go way back are surely aware of the translator’s odd behaviour and they already know of his or her ability, at a family Sunday lunch in January, to explain the history behind the galette des rois. Or this need to translate a little during the holidays while everyone else is taking a nap…
As for newer acquaintances, the translator is often all ears. Yes, the freelance translator is extremely curious about others and is especially interested upon meeting someone in a technical profession. Different terminology! (I told you, the translator is a geek.) Sometimes the translator will go so far as to leave a business card. You never know…
Sometimes, the translator cannot help but share his or her knowledge. If you’re about to spend a relaxing evening with friends, don’t take out your Trivial Pursuit! After the linguist makes five straight wins, no one wants to play with him or her again.
The freelance translator’s true self really comes out when meeting individuals of the same breed. You are probably wondering why your partner happily spends Saturday morning (Saturday morning!) to attend a talk about translation, Moldavian verb tenses or tax laws for the self-employed. Let me assure you: the translator is not insane.
While you have spent the whole week with co-workers—who you would not dream of running into on the weekend—the translator has not seen a living soul. Sure, he or she talked online all week. But you’ve got to understand that the translator needs to see others who share the same lifestyle, to talk about subjects all translators are interested in (who said only translators liked that stuff?). It’s like going to Disneyland! The most awesome part is seeing how the translator lights up to explain the importance of the latest grammar rule reform or to get you to see a Czech film subtitled in German.
The freelance translator brims with enthusiasm. Isn’t that what you like most about the one you love?

ELLE article: Myth of the Hollywood Orgasm

Tinsletown is now portraying the female orgasm more accurately with a trifecta of Oscar-nominated films
The 83rd Academy Awards were Sunday, and along with stellar performances, we had good sex to celebrate! Michelle Williams, Annette Bening, and Natalie Portman were all up for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and all three had female-driven sex scenes in their films. If the academy had voted based on the most boundary-pushing sex scene, Portman would have still taken home the win.
When thinking of Black Swan, the girl-on-girl sex scene usually comes to mind, which is not surprising given the media frenzy that focused on it. There were reports of one man actually blurting out “Yes!” in a Hollywood theater when Portman and Mila Kunis locked lips, and even the Huffington Post jumped on the male-fantasy bandwagon with a girl-on-girl Hollywood retrospective to honor those types of sex scenes. Yet no one touched Portman’s masturbation scene, in which her character, Nina, indulges her sexuality. The scene was not shot to feed male fantasy, and the character's behavior was not under the direction of a man. She’s neither raped nor coerced into sex, nor does she experience the kind of anticlimactic intercourse that most women fake their way through. She pleases herself for herself on-screen, and that’s a breakthrough for Hollywood.
Hollywood sex scenes are often hot and steamy but rarely realistic. The scenes are shot to meet many needs—though accurately portraying the female orgasm hasn’t been one of them. They need to fit a predetermined time window, they have to show that something is happening, they have to fit the camera frame, and they generally aim to excite men and match the male experience. Actress Greta Gerwig (Greenberg) stated in an interview with Movieline, “If they show sex, it’s usually…the moment his penis goes into her. She arches her back, and it looks so weird and fake.”
For the past few decades, men have run Hollywood, making up roughly 80 percent of the writers, directors, producers, etc. in the biz. Speaking candidly on the subject in the documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated, writer-director Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry) points out, “In movies that are mostly written and directed by men—they mostly reflect the male experience, even in sex scenes. It’s the male perspective.” It’s not a stretch to say that men in Hollywood created, if not wrote and directed, the popularized version of the female orgasm and based it on what they thought it was or wanted it to be.
The assumption rings true with 20 females, ages 21 through 35, who took an informal survey on the subject. All of them agreed that Hollywood does not portray the female orgasm accurately. Actress Sarah Paulson (Down With Love, What Women Want) affirms that viewpoint, “It’s not really true, in Hollywood, what happens for women.” Paulson jokingly continues, “[But] I’m the only one it’s not true with.” Paulson’s statement was echoed in the results of the informal survey. Many women wrote, “What’s normal for real women?” and “Can women achieve orgasm from intercourse?” In a sense, these inaccuracies within cinematic portrayals have led to the female orgasm becoming just another oversimplified Hollywood stereotype that’s become the standardized mental picture prevailing as a kind of truth.
Martha Lauzen, executive director at the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University, speaks of Hollywood’s impact and social responsibility: “We have to remember that the film industry does not exist in a vacuum. It is part of our larger culture.… Our perceptions of gender are held at an extremely deep level. And to change those perceptions and beliefs about gender is very difficult and takes a very long time. That’s the power of stereotypes. They are incredibly powerful, and oftentimes we’re not even aware of them.”
The inaccuracies stem from the emphasis placed on knee-jerk moaning and overly dramatic When Harry Met Sally–esque moments that women have during sex scenes. Nicole Holofcener (writer-director of Friends With Money and Please Give) adds, “[In Hollywood films], as soon as a women is touched, she’s squealing. I imagine it’s what they want us to be doing, and I think it’s a huge disservice. That’s why the Hite Report was a huge deal [when it came out in the 1970s]. That was revolutionary because [Shere Hite] was the first person who did a ton of research on the female orgasm and that it’s not generally penetration-based.”
In bedrooms across America, many women are left challenging the popular perception, educating their partners and, in some cases, faking it until they make it. Jennifer Bass, director of communication at the Kinsey Institute, weighs in: “Most men who don’t have problems will have an orgasm through intercourse. Whereas for women that is not necessarily the case. The clitoris is how most women experience orgasms because that’s the most obvious source of nerve endings for orgasms, not the vagina. Of course, it is pleasurable for women and for some women that’s the best orgasm that they have – but for many women, it’s not necessary to have intercourse in order to have an orgasm or intercourse alone will not lead to orgasm. There’s nothing the matter with that. It’s pretty common, in fact it is more common than not.”
Without knowing better, the Hollywood stereotype also leaves men expecting the performance they see in the movies from their female partner. The 20 women informally surveyed also unanimously said that Hollywood’s portrayal of the female orgasm misinforms men. One of the women surveyed added, “If a man is stupid enough to rely on the Hollywood female-orgasm portrayal to educate himself about the female orgasm, then his girlfriend, if he has one, will just have to teach him.”
But help is on the way! With the emergence of more female filmmakers and actresses enlightening Hollywood with a female perspective, we can expect more realistic female sex scenes. Holofcener adds, “People are just going to have to be more honest, and more women are going to have to make sex scenes, portrayed more honestly.” This was seen at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, where writer-director-actress Miranda July (The Future) and writer-director-actress Lake Bell (Worst Enemy) both included portrayals of the female orgasm that passed with greater accuracy. Bell said of her masturbation scene, “It’s very realistic. It’s just not that much of an event. [Women masturbate] all the time. In the middle of the day. [In the scene,] it got interrupted and it didn’t even work out. That’s how it really is.”
Thankfully, as the 2011 awards season suggests, there is room for greater diversity in these portrayals, and maybe now we are finally on the verge of some really interesting, realistic sex in Hollywood.

Actress Greta Gerwig (Greenberg) stated in an interview with Movieline, “If they show sex, it’s usually…the moment his penis goes into her. She arches her back, and it looks so weird and fake.”
For the past few decades, men have run Hollywood, making up roughly 80 percent of the writers, directors, producers, etc. in the biz. Speaking candidly on the subject in the documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated, writer-director Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry) points out, “In movies that are mostly written and directed by men—they mostly reflect the male experience, even in sex scenes. It’s the male perspective.” It’s not a stretch to say that men in Hollywood created, if not wrote and directed, the popularized version of the female orgasm and based it on what they thought it was or wanted it to be.
The assumption rings true with 20 females, ages 21 through 35, who took an informal survey on the subject. All of them agreed that Hollywood does not portray the female orgasm accurately. Actress Sarah Paulson (Down With Love, What Women Want) affirms that viewpoint, “It’s not really true, in Hollywood, what happens for women.” Paulson jokingly continues, “[But] I’m the only one it’s not true with.” Paulson’s statement was echoed in the results of the informal survey. Many women wrote, “What’s normal for real women?” and “Can women achieve orgasm from intercourse?” In a sense, these inaccuracies within cinematic portrayals have led to the female orgasm becoming just another oversimplified Hollywood stereotype that’s become the standardized mental picture prevailing as a kind of truth.
Martha Lauzen, executive director at the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University, speaks of Hollywood’s impact and social responsibility: “We have to remember that the film industry does not exist in a vacuum. It is part of our larger culture.… Our perceptions of gender are held at an extremely deep level. And to change those perceptions and beliefs about gender is very difficult and takes a very long time. That’s the power of stereotypes. They are incredibly powerful, and oftentimes we’re not even aware of them.”
The inaccuracies stem from the emphasis placed on knee-jerk moaning and overly dramatic When Harry Met Sally–esque moments that women have during sex scenes. Nicole Holofcener (writer-director of Friends With Money and Please Give) adds, “[In Hollywood films], as soon as a women is touched, she’s squealing. I imagine it’s what they want us to be doing, and I think it’s a huge disservice. That’s why the Hite Report was a huge deal [when it came out in the 1970s]. That was revolutionary because [Shere Hite] was the first person who did a ton of research on the female orgasm and that it’s not generally penetration-based.”
In bedrooms across America, many women are left challenging the popular perception, educating their partners and, in some cases, faking it until they make it. Jennifer Bass, director of communication at the Kinsey Institute, weighs in: “Most men who don’t have problems will have an orgasm through intercourse. Whereas for women that is not necessarily the case. The clitoris is how most women experience orgasms because that’s the most obvious source of nerve endings for orgasms, not the vagina. Of course, it is pleasurable for women and for some women that’s the best orgasm that they have – but for many women, it’s not necessary to have intercourse in order to have an orgasm or intercourse alone will not lead to orgasm. There’s nothing the matter with that. It’s pretty common, in fact it is more common than not.”
Without knowing better, the Hollywood stereotype also leaves men expecting the performance they see in the movies from their female partner. The 20 women informally surveyed also unanimously said that Hollywood’s portrayal of the female orgasm misinforms men. One of the women surveyed added, “If a man is stupid enough to rely on the Hollywood female-orgasm portrayal to educate himself about the female orgasm, then his girlfriend, if he has one, will just have to teach him.”
But help is on the way! With the emergence of more female filmmakers and actresses enlightening Hollywood with a female perspective, we can expect more realistic female sex scenes. Holofcener adds, “People are just going to have to be more honest, and more women are going to have to make sex scenes, portrayed more honestly.” This was seen at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, where writer-director-actress Miranda July (The Future) and writer-director-actress Lake Bell (Worst Enemy) both included portrayals of the female orgasm that passed with greater accuracy. Bell said of her masturbation scene, “It’s very realistic. It’s just not that much of an event. [Women masturbate] all the time. In the middle of the day. [In the scene,] it got interrupted and it didn’t even work out. That’s how it really is.”
Thankfully, as the 2011 awards season suggests, there is room for greater diversity in these portrayals, and maybe now we are finally on the verge of some really interesting, realistic sex in Hollywood.
