Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves in the world. It was once so rich that Concorde used to fly from Caracas to Paris. But in the last three years its economy has collapsed. Hunger has gripped the nation for years. Now, it’s killing people and animals that are dying of starvation. The Venezuelan government knows, but won’t admit it!!! Four in five Venezuelans live in poverty. People queue for hours to buy food. Much of the time they go without. People are also dying from a lack of medicines. Inflation is at 82,766% and there are warnings it could exceed one million per cent by the end of this year. Venezuelans are trying to get out. The UN says 2.3 million people have fled the country - 7% of the population.

Appeals Court to Consider Benefits of Medical Marijuana

Appeals Court to Consider Benefits of Medical Marijuana

Associated Press
For the first time in 20 years, a federal court will review scientific evidence on the therapeutic value of marijuana, as a legal challenge by a group of doctors, medical professionals and patients makes its way to the U.S. court of appeals in Washington, D.C., next week.
Americans for Safe Access is hoping the challenge will change the government’s classification of marijuana from a dangerous drug with no medical benefits, the Guardian reported. Other groups, such as the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the American Nurses Association, the Federation of American Scientists and the American Academy of Family Physicians support either medical access to marijuana or its reclassification to one that has a medical benefit.
“Medical marijuana patients are finally getting their day in court,” Joe Elford, chief counsel for ASA, told the Guardian. “This is a rare opportunity for patients to confront politically motivated decision-making with scientific evidence of marijuana’s medical efficacy.”
Last year, the Drug Enforcement Agency rejected the ASA’s petition to reschedule marijuana, saying there wasn’t substantial evidence the drug should be removed from schedule 1. The DEA cited a five-year-old assessment from the Department of Health and Human Services that said there was no consensus in the medical community on the medical applications of marijuana.
In its reply brief, the ASA says the criteria used by the DEA and HHS to determine scheduling are flawed.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit will hear arguments in the case on Oct. 16.

Marijuana Cuts Growth of Lung Cancer Tumor in Half

Marijuana Cuts Growth of Lung Cancer Tumor in Half

Delta-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in marijuana, has the potential to cut tumor growth in common lung cancer in half and significantly reduce the ability of the cancer to spread. This finding was disclosed by researchers at Harvard University who tested the chemical in both lab and mouse studies.
The compound inhibits EGF-induced growth and migration in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expressing non-small cell lung cancer cell lines. It is worthwhile to note that lung cancers, which are characterized by over-expression of EGFR, are generally highly aggressive and resistant to chemotherapy.
The active marijuana ingredient is similar in function to endocannabinoids and targets cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2. Endocannabinoids are naturally-producing cannabinoids in the body and activate the receptors CB1 and CB2.
It was suggested by the researchers that Delta-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or other designer agents that activate these receptors could be used in a targeted manner for treating lung cancer.
“The beauty of this study is that we are showing that a substance of abuse, if used prudently, may offer a new road to therapy against lung cancer,” said Anju Preet, Ph.D., a researcher in the Division of Experimental Medicine.
Endocannabinoids (as well as THC), acting through cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, are considered to play a role in variety of biological functions, such as pain control and inflammation. Even though Marinol, a medical derivative of THC, is approved for use as an appetite stimulant for cancer patients, and a small number of U.S. states allow use of medical marijuana for treating the same side effects, few studies have suggested that THC could have anti-tumor activity, according to Preet.
Researchers, in the present study, demonstrated that two different lung cancer cell lines and patient lung tumor samples express CB1 and CB2. It was also suggested that non-toxic doses of THC inhibited growth and spread in the cell lines. “When the cells are pretreated with THC, they have less EGFR stimulated invasion as measured by various in-vitro assays,” Preet said.
During the study, the researchers injected standard doses of THC into mice that had been implanted with human lung cancer cells for three weeks. They found that tumors were reduced in size and weight by about 50 percent in treated animals compared to a control group. The researchers were also able to notice a 60 percent reduction in cancer lesions on the lungs in these mice as well as a significant reduction in protein markers associated with cancer progression, Preet says.
The researchers said the substance could be activating molecules that arrest the cell cycle though they were clueless as to why THC inhibits tumor growth. It was speculated that THC may also interfere with angiogenesis and vascularization that promotes growth of cancer.
“THC offers some promise, but we have a long way to go before we know what its potential is,” Preet said. Preet also suggested that there is much work required for clarifying the pathway by which THC functions, and cautions that some animal studies have shown that THC could stimulate some cancers.

Larry King Talks Marijuana Legalization: 'I Think It Will Be Legal' (VIDEO)

Larry King spoke about the legalization of marijuana Wednesday on HuffPost Live.
King said he has "always felt" that marijuana should be legal, arguing that it was legally available until the liquor industry intervened, and claiming that it helps sick people.
"I know that it helps ill people," he told HuffPost Live's Jacob Soboroff and Alyona Minkovski. "I know it's great used with cataracts. I think it will be legal."
King said he thinks that legalization would be "logical" and that marijuana is OK "in moderation."
"I don't think you should smoke marijuana and drive," he cautioned.

Harvard Study says Marijuana Cures Cancer

Harvard Study says Marijuana Cures Cancer

Researchers at Harvard tested the chemical THC in both lab and mouse studies. They say this is the first set of experiments to show that the compound, THC actually activates naturally produced receptors to fight off lung cancer. The researchers suggest that THC or other designer agents that activate these receptors might be used in a targeted fashion to treat lung cancer.

Although a medical substitute of THC, known as Marinol, has been used as an appetite stimulant for cancer patients and other similar treatments, few studies have shown that THC might have anti-tumor activity.
*HERE IS THE INTERESTING PART* The only clinical trial testing THC as a treatment against cancer growth was a recently completed British pilot study. For three weeks, researchers injected standard doses of THC into mice that had been implanted with human lung cancer cells, and found that tumors were reduced in size and weight by about 50 percent in treated animals compared to a control group. There was also about a 60 percent reduction in cancer lesions on the lungs in these mice as well as a significant reduction in protein markers associated with cancer progression.

Anti-inflammatory fruits and veggies

Photo: <3 Fruits & Vegetables That Eliminate Inflammation! <3

Hit Share | Like | Re-post!

Read more on how these fruits and vegetables help eliminate inflammation in your body at http://livelovefruit.com/2012/10/fruits-vegetables-that-eliminate-inflammation/

People need to fuel their body with food. But most often, people reach for the wrong foods – foods that leave them feeling slow, tired, and ill. If people continue to eat the wrong foods, then these illnesses become chronic, resulting in either chronic inflammation or inflammatory based illnesses (such as Arthritis, Inflammatory bowel diseases, Bowel disease, Chrons disaese, Ulcerative colitis, Autoimmune diseases, Asthma, Acne, Vasculitis, etc.). Choosing the proper foods to help combat inflammation can help get us on the road to health and wellness. Read on to find out more how fruits and vegetables can help combat inflammation.
Foods that ELIMINATE Inflammation:
Turmeric:Turmeric is well known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric, and is a potent anti-inflammatory agent. It is mostly known for it’s beneficial effects in individuals with arthritis. Curcumin acts by scavenging free oxygen radicals in the body which are implicated in inflammation (1). It is also a potent scavenger, having been studied for its powerful Superoxide scavenging activity (1).
Hemp Seeds:Hemp seeds are a magic food (as I like to call them). They contain all 20 known amino acids including the 8 essential and 2 semi-essential amino acids (EAAs). In a 2008 Italian study it was found that hemp seeds can reduce inflammation and reduce pain symptoms for patients with muscular or skeletal inflammation. These effects occur mainly due to the ratio of EFA’s in hemp seeds.
Tart Cherries:Tart cherries have the “highest anti-inflammatory content of any food” according to the Oregon Health & Science University presented today at the AMerican College of Sports Medicine Conference (ACSM) in San Francisco, California (2). They found that drinking tart cherry juicetwice daily for three weeks led to significant reductions in inflammation markers.
Broccoli:Sulforaphane, a natural constituent of broccoli (and brussels sprouts, and other cruciferous vegetables) has been shown to prevent joint pain in the same way that a COX-2 arthritis drug would do (but without the harmful side effects a drug would impose on you). Broccoli also contains salicylic acid, which inhibits production of prostaglandin hormones and thus reduce joint pain and inflammation.
Pineapple:Pineapples contain Bromelain which has demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo therapeutic properties like reducing inflammation (3). Manhart et al. (4) have shown bromelain to significantly reduce CD4+T lymphocytes, primary effectors of inflammation.
Spinach:The flavonoids and carotenoids found in spinach have been associated with reduced inflammation, especially in the digestive tract. Neoxanthin and violaxanthin are two anti-inflammatory epoxyxanthophylls that are also found in spinach, although not in high quantities, still contribute to reducing inflammation in the body (5).
Avocado:A constituent in avocado called persenone A suppresses the effects of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX-2), two chemicals that cause inflammation in the body (6). This study suggested that persenone A in avocados have the ability to prevent inflammation-associated diseases including cancer.
Onions & Garlic:Onions and garlic contain similar compounds that contribute to their anti-inflammatory effects (they are “cousins” in the food world). These compounds, such as vitamin C and quercetin, inhibit enzymes that generate inflammatory prostaglandins and thromboxanes (7). These two foods are great for cold and flu season (which is coming up!), because they help fight viruses and clear our sinuses.
Nuts & Seeds:Nuts and seeds contain unsaturated fats and other nutrients that can reduce inflammation. Jiang and colleagues (8) examined associations between nut and seed consumption and C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, and fibrinogen in individuals with Atherosclerosis. Individuals who consumed nuts and seeds 1-4 times per week was associated with lower levels of inflammatory markers which may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk.
Berries:Berries are incredibly high in antioxidants such as anthocyanins which confer anti-inflammatory protection against diseases such as cancer, arthritis, and dementia. In fact, one study found that the anti-inflammatory effects of berries vary depending on their anthocyanin compositions and that blackberry anthocyanin fractions contain more potent anti-inflammatory effects than blueberry and black currants (9). It is best to consume organic berries as they are sprayed with pesticides that are harmful to our health.
Foods that CAUSE Inflammation:
Margarine, Sugar, Fast Food, Gluten, Meat, Eggs & Dairy – Foods that all have extremely acidic pH levels are often those that cause inflammation in the body. These foods trigger an invasive response in the body, and the body will naturally release chemicals that attack these food particles and cause the body to inflame. This will eventually lead to sickness and disease if continually eaten on a day to day basis.

Migraine Cure: Marijuana Gives Miracle Relief

Article from Oct 2012

Migraine Cure: Marijuana Gives Miracle Relief

Phil Leveque was an Army Infantryman, Doctor of Pharmacology, Forensic Toxicologist and Osteopathic Physician.

Marijuana migraine
Courtesy: ediblemj.com
(PORTLAND, OR) - I guess I was a bit excited when I wrote this and my first article on the subject “Marijuana VS Migraines: Modern Medical Miracle” in Salem-News.com June 30th 2008. Then I was excited about it because the best treatment I had used was Demerol and Benadry injections which knocked the patient out for at least a whole day. This is much better.

Recently in Salem-News.com, a story appeared by Dr. Dianne Stafford, October 3rd 2012 entitled, “Not Just A Headache: Eleven Ways Not To Treat A Migraine”. I hoped that it would be some good stuff but it was a fizzling blah. She didn’t mention one treatment which was a good idea because there are some 20 different pharmaceuticals most of which don’t work for most people. For a migraine sufferer her list is worthless.

I don’t consider myself any great stuff about migraine therapy but I had a real opportunity in this regard when Oregon legalized marijuana for about 10 diseases including severe pain, spasms (of smooth muscle such as blood vessels in the brain), and nausea and vomiting.

Cannabis/marijuana works well for all of these. I must have ended up with about 50 migraine patients who had previously been prescribed or given dozens of poorly working drugs.

At the time no other physician/pharmacologist had published that cannabis/marijuana was effective for migraines, so I published my article. I received 32 responses on 8 pages from July 1st, 2008 till September 1st, 2011. Some are quite short but others are long extolling the effectiveness of cannabis/marijuana therapy. You can read my article and comments. I will reprint a few of the shorter ones:

Anonymous September 1, 2011: I have recently started having migraine headaches and I have to say it is painful. I recently started smoking marijuana in order to cope with the pain and it helps. Luckily for me I live in Denver where marijuana is legal and I go to this one dispensary closest to my home and get some Kush and it usually takes my pain right away. The bad part is that I am risking being fired from my job because of it.

509meds December 14, 2010: Marijuana cures all pain period. I’m a patient for migraines and I legally grow some strong weed for pain here in Washington state and it works great marijuana is truly Gods gift to us all so f@#k all those ignorant dinosaurs who compare marijuana to meth and heroin, weed is not the problem it’s the solution so spread the love and support the marijuana movement.

Ashton September 1, 2010: I’ve suffered from migraines my whole life. I’ve seen numerous doctors and tried countless medicines. I eventually found one that reduces the amount of migraines I get but nothing helps the onset leaving me useless. All I can do is go to sleep. I’ve smoked for about three years but didn’t realize this was the answer till about a year ago. It was life changing and now every time I had weed and a migraine I smoke of course. I just needs to be legal, it will boost our economy and empty our jail cells!

Kris. k July 13, 2010: I’m 15 I play sports and get involved in school I suffer from migraines for about 9 years I get them a lot like at least 2 a week mostly I've been getting them 3 or 4 times a week to the point were im sick and cant do nothing but my parents don’t want me to do marijuana ive taken all sorts of pills to help they don’t work ive even been given vicoden it doesn’t work though what do I do.

Dawnie November 8, 2009: I’ve dealt with migraines since I was 17, ive tried a lot of meds and nothing seemed to help much. About 4 years ago I took a few puffs of marijuana and wasn’t sure if I liked the feeling but realized it helped my head. I use it now to prevent migraines and it really works. I also use it after I get a migraine and it slows down enough for me to cope. I am 42 years old and it took this long to find something that really works.

Alexa July 16, 2009: I had just graduated from high school only a few months ago. Although marijuana is not legal many kids smoke it regardless. Throughout high school I had smoked a lot of pot. I had started getting migraines when I was 15. Because they were very infrequent it wasn’t a huge problem. Now I have been getting them 5-7 times a month. I had been visiting the doctor many times within these months and nothing seemed to work. I thought I’d experiment with pot and my migraines. I wanted to see if this drug would help my migraines. It helped significantly. Although it didn’t completely get rid of my migraine, it certainly helped my pain level

Marijuana And Cancer: Scientists Find Cannabis Compound Stops Metastasis In Aggressive Cancers

20 years of research to figure this out

"We started by researching breast cancer," said Desprez. "But now we've found that Cannabidiol works with many kinds of aggressive cancers--brain, prostate--any kind in which these high levels of ID-1 are present."

Marijuana And Cancer: Scientists Find Cannabis Compound Stops Metastasis In Aggressive Cancers

A pair of scientists at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco has found that a compound derived from marijuana could stop metastasis in many kinds of aggressive cancer, potentially altering the fatality of the disease forever.

"It took us about 20 years of research to figure this out, but we are very excited," said Pierre Desprez, one of the scientists behind the discovery, to The Huffington Post. "We want to get started with trials as soon as possible."

THC selectively targets and destroys tumor cells while leaving healthy cells unscathed. Conventional chemotherapy drugs, by contrast, are highly toxic; they indiscriminately damage the brain and body.

"We used injections in the animal testing and are also testing pills," he said. "But you could never get enough Cannabidiol for it to be effective just from smoking."

Marijuana for migraines

Marijuana is sometimes used as a migraine herbal supplement. It comes from dried flowers, stems, seeds, and leaves of the Cannibis sativa hemp plant. The plant, which can grow more than 15 feet tall, has a very distinct smell. Its green leaves grow in an easily recognizable pattern of five to nine leaves on stem and each leaf has jagged edges.

It is one of the oldest plants grown by humans. In the U.S., it is has been illegal to buy, sell, grow, own or use Marijuana since 1937.

Marijuana has been used for centuries as a natural remedy. Traces of its active chemicals have been found in ancient Egyptian mummies. Ancient Chinese cultures wrote about its use more than two thousand years ago.

Medical marijuana uses includes:

  • Easing symptoms associated with HIV and cancer
  • Improving appetite
  • Controlling nausea and vomiting
  • Decrease eye pressure
  • Relieving pain

Marijuana headaches and migraines

There are practically no studies on medical marijuana for migraines. Therefore there is no concrete scientific evidence on marijuana’s effectiveness, the proper dosage or the best method to ingest it.

Medical marijuana and chronic migraine headache

In the late 1800s marijuana was often used by doctors for treating migraines and other types of headaches.

The most popular way to use marijuana is to smoke the dried leaves. Smoking quickly gets Marijuana’s chemicals into the bloodstream. When Marijuana is eaten, it leaves a lower level of chemicals in the body but it has a longer lasting effect.

Can medical marijuana treat migraines?

The Cannibis sativa hemp plant contains more than 400 chemicals. The chemical responsible for many of marijuana’s qualities is called THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol. It binds to receptors found throughout the body’s brain and other parts of the nervous system. THC acts on these receptors that impact pain, appetite, pleasure, memory, thought and coordination.

More than a dozen states have laws allowing medical use of marijuana in certain cases, although it is not a U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved drug. In the state of California, migraine is listed in the state’s health and safety code as an illness that is acceptable for marijuana use.

Side effects and other precautions

Marijuana is not a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved drug. Therefore its strength and purity are not regulated. It is also considered an illegal, illicit drug. Some states allow its use for certain medical ailments with a doctor’s recommendation. Because marijuana is not tightly regulated the way approved drugs are, it is difficult to list side effects because its strength and purity may vary with each use. Below are some side effects seen in studies:

Side effects from smoking marijuana

  • Breathing problems
  • Coughing
  • Increased risk of lung infection

Butterbur for Migraines

Butterbur comes from the Butterbur plant (Petasites hybridus), which is a perennial shrub found in Europe, Asia and parts of North America. It grows in wet, marshy soil, damp forests and along rivers and streams.

It has long been used as an herbal treatment for migraines, the plague, asthma, ulcers, wounds, allergies and skin infections. The best evidence, based on studies and trials, is for its use in migraine and allergy sufferers. Originally, the plant’s root was used. However, higher levels certain potentially toxic ingredients were found in the root. Now, supplements use only the leaves.

How Butterbur works

The substances petasin and isopetasin are found in Butterbur. They work to reduce spasms and reduce inflammation. These actions are thought to help prevent migraines and reduce migraine headaches.

Side effects and other precautions

Because Butterbur is a natural remedy and not a pharmaceutical drug, the is limited data available on how it works in the human body as well as the possible side effects. There is no information available on use of Butterbur longer than 12 to 16 weeks. Some studies have found that people taking Butterbur experience the following side effects:

  • Headaches
  • Drowsiness
  • Constipation
  • Upset stomach
  • Hair loss
  • Depression or neurological disorders
  • Skin or eye discoloration
  • Skin and allergic reactions
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty breathing or exhaling
  • Itchy eyes
  • Halitosis, bad breath
  • Itching
  • Discolored stool
  • A condition called reversible cholestatic hepatitis, which means bile can’t flow properly from the liver because of swelling or blockage
  • A possible increase in liver enzymes

As with any natural remedy, prescription or over-the-counter treatment, you should first check with your doctor before taking Butterbur to learn if it might interact with anything else you’re taking or learn if it will have a dangerous impact on any condition you have.
