Why Hollywood Loves Puerto Rico...

Versatile locations, attractive rebates and experience crews have everyone from the "Fast Five" producers to HBO and Showtime headed to the Caribbean hotspot -- it's more than just the rum.

Canada Tops World List of Cost-Effective Digital Locations, KPMG Report

Johnny Depp's 'The Rum Diary' to Open Bahamas Film Festival

'Game of Thrones' Photos Reveal Notable Locations

What do HBO's hit offbeat comedy Eastbound & Down, the Vin Diesel action extravaganza Fast Five and the Leonardo DiCaprio-produced thriller Runner, Runner have in common? Puerto Rico, one of Hollywood's new favorite shooting destinations. With about 70 percent of foreign shoots there employing the region as a convincing stand-in for other locations, the commonwealth has thrived lately thanks to a host of factors. Here are five reasons why Hollywood is increasingly heading to the "Island of Enchantment" for offshore shoots.

1. MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK

Puerto Rico boasts one of the most robust film incentive programs in all of Latin America and the Caribbean. In a nutshell, the region offers a 20 percent tax credit on payments made to above-the-line nonresidents, including producers, directors, writers and talent. Sweetening the deal is a 40 percent rebate on payments made to Puerto Rican residents for below-the-line services.
Since 2011, some 30 foreign productions in TV and film and advertising have reaped the benefits of the tax breaks, including Johnny Depp's The Rum Diary, which spent $20 million on location in Puerto Rico and received an $8 million credit in return (a good thing considering its tepid $13 million domestic box office).

2. NO FOREIGN EXCHANGE RATE

As a U.S. territory, Puerto Rico is in the unique position of being able to offer many conveniences of the mainland.

STORY: Who in Hollywood Owns a Private Island

Case in point: Puerto Rico uses the U.S. dollar as its currency, and its banking system operates under the same stateside protections. What's more, Puerto Rico abides by the same labor laws, and U.S. citizens need no passport to get there.

Says executive producer James Holt, who shot 2009's The Men Who Stare at Goats in Puerto Rico, "People don't necessarily register that this is a U.S. territory. It doesn't present the same headaches as filming in a foreign country."

3. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

As Puerto Rico's tax credits draw more productions, it's becoming more common for the region to double for other locations. Settings in and around the capital of San Juan were depicted as Rio de Janeiro in the action flick Fast Five. And for the current filming of the gambling drama Runner, Runner, starring Ben Affleck, Puerto Rico substitutes for Costa Rica.
VIDEO: 'The Rum Diary' Trailer: Johnny Depp Drinks His Way Through Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico consists of a main island surrounded by a cluster of smaller ones. As one might expect, Puerto Rico appeals to tourists thanks to a number of stunning locations, but what it offers filmmakers is diversity: from lush mountains and white-sand beaches to colonial-era architecture and modern, urban settings.

Puerto Rico also benefits from its proximity to the U.S. With Miami just 2½ hours away by plane (a $450 flight), producers get to reap the benefits of rebates while saving money on travel.

4. EXPERIENCED, ENGLISH- SPEAKING CREWS

Puerto Rico has hosted about 90 foreign shoots since 1999, and local crews have become skilled at servicing a range of productions, including such effects-laden tentpoles as Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, action vehicles like the James Bond film GoldenEye and TV series such as the Showtime dramedy The Big C.
"We traveled in with our department heads and most of our camera crew but then staffed the remainder of crew locally," says Laura Benson, production manager on The Big C. "They were extremely helpful and hardworking."
Another benefit: English is an official language in Puerto Rico.
The only drawback, Benson notes, was that the location has become so popular that two other productions were filming at the same time as The Big C, making it a challenge to round up a crew.

5. A SAFE SHOOTING ENVIRONMENT
What Puerto Rico lacks in soundstages and full-service facilities, it makes up for in safety. Rival location Mexico offers the whole enchilada when it comes to industry infrastructure, but its ongoing drug war has spooked some producers.

The higher-ups at HBO were taking no chances on season two of Eastbound & Down. When the comedy's setting moved from North Carolina to a fictional Mexican town, producers opted to shoot in Puerto Rico because of security concerns about filming south of the border.
Puerto Rico also offers peace of mind in the form of free hurricane insurance coverage. According to Puerto Rico film commissioner Mariella Perez, the government will pay a premium for hurricane insurance when producers want to shoot during hurricane season. Since the studios usually have umbrella coverage, the insurance is geared toward independent productions. Says Perez: "They're the ones that really need an extra push."

Hollywood Studios Reach Deal With China's Taobao on Anti-Piracy Efforts...

The Chinese e-commerce giant pledges more aggressive action to curtail counterfeits.

The Motion Picture Association has announced that it has reached a memorandum of understanding with Chinese's largest e-commerce company Taobao to deal with counterfeit and copyright infringing works on the site.

Last year, Taobao appeared on the United States Trade Representative's notorious markets list. Taobao is operated as a unit of the Alibaba Group, which engaged China's Ministry of Commerce to protest the appearance.

Since then, the Chinese company has been negotiating with the MPA, the international counterpart to the MPAA, whose members include Fox, Sony, Disney, and Warner Bros.

The parties have now signed off on a pact.

According to the MPA, Taobao will work with Hollywood studios to identify and remove listings of counterfeits and work with law enforcement to pursue serial offenders. The agreement further calls for shops on Taobao.com to hold a valid "publication license."

Mike Ellis, president and managing director, MPA Asia Pacific, calls the memorandum of understanding a "very significant step in promoting the legitimate sale and distribution of audio-visual content on the Internet. We are very confident of seeing positive and immediate results arising from this initiative.

Taobao holds as much as 70 percent of China's e-commerce marketshare, according to Reuters.

Social Media Research Firm Fizziology Launches in U.K....

The company will provide information on U.K. buzz to entertainment companies and brands.

LONDON - Social media research firm Fizziology has launched a research arm for the U.K. to provide new geographically-focused information on social media buzz to entertainment companies and brands.

The company uses sentiment analysis to track audience opinions on a movie or TV shows based on what people share on Twitter, Facebook and blogs. Based on its work, it also provides box office predictions, advertising analysis, guidance on casting decisions and other things.

While social media trackers typically collect global data, Fizziology uses a three-layer language and geo-location approach to capture only U.K. social media conversations. "Fizziology is able to deliver U.K.-based intelligence to help studios, networks and brands better determine how to craft their marketing strategies for the U.K. without the noise of additional markets," the company said.

It plans to launch similar services in other international markets as well.

"Every market is a little different," explained Ben Carlson, president and co-creator of Fizziology, the need for geographically targeted data. "Different characters and storylines or lines pop in different markets. And some programming only airs in one. This gives us the ability to parse it and provide a much truer look for decision makers who are making or marketing the show."

The company provided a recent example of a show that ended its season in the U.S., while it was still in full swing in Britain.

"For example, when analyzing conversation around a TV show like The Newsroom, we can determine which social media conversations are taking place amongst the U.S. audience versus those that occurred in the U.K.," said Jen Handley, COO and co-creator of Fizziology. "With the trend towards same-day international release dates for movies and television shows, the ability to know whether a certain conversation trend is coming from the U.K. or another audience becomes even more important."

She said British social media conversations about The Newsroom focused more on the relationships between characters than in the U.S., for example, which TV network marketers could use to tailor their marketing messages.

"In addition to being able to better measure U.K. social media buzz from a data perspective, we are focused on providing understanding and intelligence tailored to the U.K. market," said Carlson. He said the coding of social media conversations is being handled by people in the U.K. who can pick up regional cultural references and analyze phrases that may be lost on U.S. researchers.

Interns, Internships and 20th Century Fox...

Kids off the Bus Fire Back: Internship Lawsuit Goes Class Action

September 4, 2012  | By Mark London Williams

“The summer is past, the harvest is here, and we are not saved,” remarked the prophet Jeremiah about the fall season, and this autumn, another thing that might not be salvageable is the Hollywood tradition of dangling putative glitz and glamor to newcomers to get them to work as unpaid interns as a first step in “dues-paying” their way up the chain of showbiz command.

But two plaintiffs who worked on the film Black Swan, have sued 20th Century Fox, saying, in effect the internship programs have been used simply for unpaid labor – at the “gofer” level of fetching and errand-running – rather than working as an unpaid apprentice, learning rudimentary aspects of a specific skill, which is generally how the position is advertised.

As Joe Satran described it in the Huffngton Post, however, a “small skirmish” was won recently by the plaintiffs – interns Eric Glatt and Alexander Footman – when “Judge William H. Pauley III allowed them to file a motion to amend their suit to expand the plaintiff class to include everyone who has worked as an unpaid intern at Fox Entertainment Group for the past several years.”

The deadline to file the motion is Sept. 5, and the Judge said he would rule on it at a hearing Oct. 9. According to the article, “Pauley encouraged Fox’s legal team not to contest the motion.”

Even though the trial itself – if there is one – isn’t slated for 2013, there’s already fallout from suit. Union Roundup caught up with Gabrielle Wirth, a partner at the international law firm Dorsey & Whitney, who specializes in employee and labor law, especially as it is practiced here in California.

She notes that the problem – having “lost track of an internship being…an internship,” – is endemic in a lot of creative industries, not only showbiz, but fashion and showbiz as well. You couldn’t really send someone for coffee or dry cleaning if it was an internship in building cars, or creating methane-eating bacteria in a lab. But it happens a lot in industries perceived to have “sex appeal.”

There are, she notes, fairly “strict standards put forth by the Department of Labor” about what internships are actually supposed to be, and in response to the lawsuit, she says many studios have “already started paying minimum wage” for these positions.

Which makes it more interesting, since the suit is over unpaid internships. Once the intern becomes paid, even – especially? – at minimum wage, it’s once again fair game to… send them out for coffee and dry cleaning. But employers are also mindful of the overtime provisions that would kick in, so student interns wouldn’t be on set for 13-plus hours of gofering, under this arrangement.

Of course, this also means that once the work is recognized as essentially being paid gofer work – and not an internship – all those potential interns in that potential class-action suit could now be liable for back pay. Talk about residuals!

Wirth’s firm also helps companies structure their own internships to comply with the law. One of the changes she expects to become even more pronounced is that these programs will increasingly be under the province of schools – like UCLA, USC, and Chapman University – that have renowned film programs, and can place students in such programs.

Colleges could help define what “the student expects to get out of” the internship, as well as overseeing that the programs aren’t used strictly as a “pre-interview” process. Not that anyone would object to being offered steady work after completing such a program, but the Department of Labor is pretty clear that you can’t simply set up a program so that someone’s “probationary period,” as it were, is simply unpaid work.

And the schools, she’s pretty sure, would be glad to oversee the programs because it would be “far easier to have their grads” be the ones who have a leg up – due to the on-the-job experience – to find work, the actual paid kind, in the industry afterwards. Plus, the schools can “take the onus off the employer,” i.e., the studios, in making sure the programs are compliant.

And with the studios actually paying their P.A.’s, instead of just calling them “interns,” this may help with another aspect of breaking in. The Huffington Post piece quotes John WIlliams, founder of Reel Works Teen Filmmaking, a group which mentors underprivileged youth to help them break into the film industry. “If you’re a poor kid, or you can’t afford to work for free, and people are saying you should work for free, that’s going to favor kids who can do that, whose parents can pay their bills for years. It probably has an impact on how diverse the film industry is,” he says.

The implication, then, is that the minimum wage job on the set will still give you a leg up compared to, say, the minimum wage job at Wal-Mart or McDonald’s. Though one wonders if ultimately those whose families can afford to send them to the colleges overseeing the internship programs will still have the “legs up.”

Time will tell, and the first steps on that calendar will be the hearing on the motion to expand to “class action width” in the suit, and then – if it gets that far – the actual trial next year.

Meanwhile, if you’re asked to fetch a producer’s dry cleaning, instead of being able to log hours rigging lights or cutting costumes, like you were promised, take comfort in the fact that – at least in California – you’re getting upwards of eight bucks an hour for your efforts. Plus overtime.

And hey – there’s usually free food on set, too.

Marijuana for migraines

Marijuana is sometimes used as a migraine herbal supplement. It comes from dried flowers, stems, seeds, and leaves of the Cannibis sativa hemp plant. The plant, which can grow more than 15 feet tall, has a very distinct smell. Its green leaves grow in an easily recognizable pattern of five to nine leaves on stem and each leaf has jagged edges.

It is one of the oldest plants grown by humans. In the U.S., it is has been illegal to buy, sell, grow, own or use Marijuana since 1937.

Marijuana has been used for centuries as a natural remedy. Traces of its active chemicals have been found in ancient Egyptian mummies. Ancient Chinese cultures wrote about its use more than two thousand years ago.

Medical marijuana uses includes:

  • Easing symptoms associated with HIV and cancer
  • Improving appetite
  • Controlling nausea and vomiting
  • Decrease eye pressure
  • Relieving pain

Marijuana headaches and migraines

There are practically no studies on medical marijuana for migraines. Therefore there is no concrete scientific evidence on marijuana’s effectiveness, the proper dosage or the best method to ingest it.

Medical marijuana and chronic migraine headache

In the late 1800s marijuana was often used by doctors for treating migraines and other types of headaches.

The most popular way to use marijuana is to smoke the dried leaves. Smoking quickly gets Marijuana’s chemicals into the bloodstream. When Marijuana is eaten, it leaves a lower level of chemicals in the body but it has a longer lasting effect.

Can medical marijuana treat migraines?

The Cannibis sativa hemp plant contains more than 400 chemicals. The chemical responsible for many of marijuana’s qualities is called THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol. It binds to receptors found throughout the body’s brain and other parts of the nervous system. THC acts on these receptors that impact pain, appetite, pleasure, memory, thought and coordination.

More than a dozen states have laws allowing medical use of marijuana in certain cases, although it is not a U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved drug. In the state of California, migraine is listed in the state’s health and safety code as an illness that is acceptable for marijuana use.

Side effects and other precautions

Marijuana is not a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved drug. Therefore its strength and purity are not regulated. It is also considered an illegal, illicit drug. Some states allow its use for certain medical ailments with a doctor’s recommendation. Because marijuana is not tightly regulated the way approved drugs are, it is difficult to list side effects because its strength and purity may vary with each use. Below are some side effects seen in studies:

Side effects from smoking marijuana

  • Breathing problems
  • Coughing
  • Increased risk of lung infection
  • Dry mouth
  • Other marijuana side effects
  • Impaired memory
  • Increased heart rate
  • Possible physical or psychological dependence or addiction
  • Loss of coordination
  • Anxiety
  • Paranoia
  • Problems thinking and solving problems
  • Red eyes
  • Increased appetite

Who should not take Marijuana

If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding, you must consult your doctor before taking any supplement. It is well-known that smoking endangers the health of developing babies and should be avoided by pregnant women.

Butterbur for Migraines

Butterbur comes from the Butterbur plant (Petasites hybridus), which is a perennial shrub found in Europe, Asia and parts of North America. It grows in wet, marshy soil, damp forests and along rivers and streams.

It has long been used as an herbal treatment for migraines, the plague, asthma, ulcers, wounds, allergies and skin infections. The best evidence, based on studies and trials, is for its use in migraine and allergy sufferers. Originally, the plant’s root was used. However, higher levels certain potentially toxic ingredients were found in the root. Now, supplements use only the leaves.

How Butterbur works

The substances petasin and isopetasin are found in Butterbur. They work to reduce spasms and reduce inflammation. These actions are thought to help prevent migraines and reduce migraine headaches.

Side effects and other precautions

Because Butterbur is a natural remedy and not a pharmaceutical drug, the is limited data available on how it works in the human body as well as the possible side effects. There is no information available on use of Butterbur longer than 12 to 16 weeks. Some studies have found that people taking Butterbur experience the following side effects:

  • Headaches
  • Drowsiness
  • Constipation
  • Upset stomach
  • Hair loss
  • Depression or neurological disorders
  • Skin or eye discoloration
  • Skin and allergic reactions
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty breathing or exhaling
  • Itchy eyes
  • Halitosis, bad breath
  • Itching
  • Discolored stool
  • A condition called reversible cholestatic hepatitis, which means bile can’t flow properly from the liver because of swelling or blockage
  • A possible increase in liver enzymes

As with any natural remedy, prescription or over-the-counter treatment, you should first check with your doctor before taking Butterbur to learn if it might interact with anything else you’re taking or learn if it will have a dangerous impact on any condition you have.

Who should not take Butterbur

If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or nursing, do not take Butterbur

If you are taking other agents that contain the same active ingredients as Butterbur, such as borage, gravel root and ragwort

If you have liver disease, congestive heart failure, are on blood thinners, barbiturates or blood sugar lowering medications

If you take any medications in the anticholinergics/antispasmodic class, which are used to relieve cramps or spasms in the stomach, intestines, and bladder

If you are allergic to any plants in the P. hybridus or Asteraceae/Compositae family

Missing Syrian producer Orwa Nyrabia

Ten days on, still no news on missing Syrian producer Orwa Nyrabia

The film and documentary world have stepped up calls for the release of Syrian producer Orwa Nyrabia, who is believed to have been arrested by local security services following his unexplained disappearance from Damascus airport ten days ago.
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) said in a statement it was,  “extremely concerned by his arrest – film-makers must be allowed to express themselves without fear of reprisal.”
From France, the producer and directors body L’ARP, the Cannes Film Festival, the Cinémathèque Francaise, the writers guild SACD and the multimedia union Scam issued a joint statement calling for his release.
“Orwa Nyrabia belongs to a young generation of Syrian cineastes and cinephiles, who love cinema from around the world and freedom. His arrest worries and outrages us,” read the statement.
Director Martin Scorsese has also lent this voice to the campaign saying in a statement: “‎”I was alarmed by the news that the Syrian actor and producer Orwa Nyrabia has been arrested by the Syrian regime, held in an undisclosed location and denied any communication with the outside world, including his own immediate family.”
“The international film community must remain vigilant, and shine a light on every injustice perpetrated against our fellow artists. We need to maintain pressure to ensure the immediate release of Orwa Nyrabia,” it continued.
From the documentary world, Super Size Me director Morgan Spurlock Tweeted a message of support for Nyrabia over the weekend, calling on followers to spread the word on his arrest.
Nyrabia, 34, was reported missing by his family on August 23 after he disappeared at Damascus airport where he was due to have boarded a flight for Cairo.
“According to Egyptian Airlines, he did not board the plane, which indicates that he was arrested by the Syrian authorities at the airport,” his family explained at the time.
Sources close to Nyrabia’s family say there is still no news on his whereabouts.
Nyrabia, who studied film production in France, is the co-founder of Damascus-based production company Proaction Film and the documentary-focused DOX BOX Film Festival alongside Diana El-Jeiroudi.
The pair are respected figures in the Arab filmmaking community and beyond for their tireless efforts to produce and promote Syrian cinema at home and abroad.
Nyrabia’s family and friends have set up a facebook campaign in support of the producer entitled: Freedom for Syrian Cinema, Freedom for Orwa Nyrabia: Like his Facebook here

L.A.'s ban on medical marijuana dispensaries

By Rick Orlov, Staff Writer
Posted:   08/29/2012 01:39:05 PM PDT
Updated:   08/29/2012 03:07:01 PM PDT

The city's long struggle to control medical marijuana dispensaries took a new turn on Wednesday with the collection of 50,000 signatures on petitions to overturn the city's proposed ban on dispensaries.

If the signatures are validated once they are formally submitted on Thursday, it will put the city's ban - scheduled to take effect on Sept.6 - on hold until the March 5 municipal election.

Don Duncan, California director of Americans for Safe Access, urged the City Council to rescind its ordinance and return to negotiating with medical marijuana advocates.

"Very soon, the city will be faced with having to rescind its ordinance or put the decision before Los Angeles voters," Duncan said.

"Because of the ban's questionable future, the city ought to reconsider its tough stance on enforcing the ban."

Councilman Jose Huizar, who authored the citywide ban on the dispensaries because of their proliferation, said he remained undeterred by the threat of the referendum.

"We still plan to move forward with the idea that dispensaries do not have a right to exist," Huizar said. "If there is a stay on the ordinance, we will have no law in the city allowing the dispensaries and we will enforce state and federal laws on marijuana."

There also has been an ongoing dispute between the state and federal authorities on the issue. California voters approved medical marijuana with Proposition 215 - a measure federal authorities argue is in violation of their laws on marijuana as an outlawed substance.
Huizar said the city has tried to work with the medical marijuana community without success.

"We passed a measure that we thought worked and we were hit with 70 lawsuits," Huizar said. "It strikes me this is more about profit than getting marijuana to people who need it."

Huizar called his proposal a gentle ban in that it allowed patients and caregivers to grow marijuana without punishment.

Kris Hermes, spokesman for Americans for Safe Access, said the ease with which the signatures were gathered and the number should send a message to City Hall. They needed 28,000 signatures to qualify for the ballot; they collected 50,000.

"The patients and advocates have come forward and said the ban is unacceptable and should be reconsidered," Hermes said, adding the city chose to avoid considering ordinances from other cities that would have been acceptable.

Assistant City Clerk Holly Wolcott said the city will use a random sample of the signatures submitted to determine if the referendum qualifies for the ballot. It would be placed on the regularly scheduled March ballot to avoid any additional costs.

Anti-migraine ingredients: No.18 ALL BERRIES

Anti-migraine ingredients = Anti-inflammatory ingredients

No.18 ALL BERRIES

BERRIES ANTI-MIGRAINE PROPERTIESANTI-INFLAMMATORY + ANTIOXIDANT + ANTI-CANCER

1. Blueberry

The blueberry is quite possibly the healthiest fruit there is--it ranked number one in antioxidant capacity by researchers at the USDA Human Nutrition Center when compared to 40 other fresh fruits and vegetables.

"When it comes to brain protection, there's nothing quite like blueberries," says Tufts neuroscientist James Joseph. "I call the blueberry the brain berry," he says, attributing the effect to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

And the American Institute for Cancer Research has this to say: "We now know that blueberries are one of the best sources of antioxidants, substances that can slow the aging process and reduce cell damage that can lead to cancer."

Aside from protecting the brain and fighting cancer, blueberries have been associated with lower cholesterol, protection against heart disease, macular degeneration, glaucoma, varicose veins, hemorrhoids and peptic ulcers, and healthier elimination.

Rich in vitamins C and E, manganese and dietary fiber, about 30 different species of blueberries grow throughout the United States and Canada.

2. Cherry

As if their sweet taste wasn't enough of a reason to eat them, cherries are rich in queritrin (a flavonoid that's a potent anti-cancer agent), anthocyanins and bioflavonoids (compounds that fight the pain from arthritis, gout and migraines), ellagic acid (another potent anti-cancer agent) and melatonin (which may help you sleep). They also contain the soluble fiber pectin, vitamin C, beta-carotene and potassium.

If it seems like cherries are only around for a short time, you're right--their season is only three months long. Cherries come in two basic varieties, sweet and sour. The Bing cherry is the most popular of the sweet cherries and is best for snacking, while the smaller and brighter sour cherries are most often used for pies, sauces or other baked goods. For a treat, try the incredibly sweet and selectively grown Rainier cherries.

3. Strawberry

Like other berries, strawberries contain phytonutrients called phenols that make it a heart-protective, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory fruit. Strawberries also help protect the brain from oxidative stress and age-related decline and fight macular degeneration of the eyes. They're an excellent source of vitamins C and K, manganese, fiber and iodine, and they contain potassium, folate, riboflavin, vitamin B5, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B6, magnesium and copper.

There are over 600 varieties of berries out there, and they can be used in everything from salads to breakfast shakes to desserts. Because strawberries don't ripen any further once they're picked, be sure to choose shiny berries with a deep red color and use them within a few days.

4. Bilberry

Similar to the blueberry, bilberries are often referred to as European blueberries. They're rich in antioxidants and are widely known as a potent protector of the eyes and have been linked to improvements in night vision, cataracts, macular degeneration and vision overall.

Interestingly, the eye-protective benefits of bilberries were first noticed during World War II when British Royal Air Force (RAF) pilots discovered that they had better night vision on bombing raids when they ate bilberry preserves beforehand.

The bilberry also contains compounds that enhance blood flow to circulatory vessels, which means it may be beneficial for circulatory problems including varicose veins, hemorrhoids and more.

Bilberries taste just like blueberries, but they're about three times smaller in size.

5. Blackberry

Blackberries contain antioxidants, vitamins C and E, and ellagic acid, all of which may protect against cancer and fight chronic disease. They're also rich in the soluble fiber pectin, which may help lower cholesterol, and potassium.

Wild blackberries are actually related to the rose, and, like a rose, they grow on a thorny bush. Because they're highly perishable (like all berries), blackberries should, ideally, be used the same day they're bought and washed just prior to eating.

6. Elderberry

In 400 B.C., Hippocrates referred to the elder tree as his "medicine chest," and it's been used since ancient times to treat colds, flus, arthritis, constipation and more. Today, the elderberry is still in popular demand when it comes to health, especially in Austria, Germany and England.

Elderberries contain plenty of antioxidants, anti-viral compounds, anthocyanins that help enhance immune function, and compounds that help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol.

The berries are small and round and range in color from dark purple to bluish-black. Elderberries should not be eaten raw, as they're mildly poisonous and can cause nausea or vomiting if eaten unripe (and they're quite sour). The mild toxicity is destroyed by cooking, though, so the berries are typically used to make jams, jellies and homemade wine. They can also be used in place of blueberries in things like muffins, cakes and pies.

7. Goji Berries

It's said that a handful of goji berries in the morning will make you happy for the rest of the day. Traditionally, they're regarded as a potent food for longevity, strength and sexual virility and are grown in Tibet in protected valleys that contain million-year-old soil that's reportedly untouched by pollutants or pesticides.

As tradition goes, the berries are never touched by human hands (this would cause them to oxidize and turn black), but instead are shaken onto mats and then dried or made into a liquid juice. There's even a legend that says Li Qing Yuen, who "lived to the age of 252 years" (1678-1930), ate Goji berries every day.

Modern day studies have also found some benefits to goji berries; they've been said to have potential in fighting cancer and protecting the liver. Goji berries contain 18 amino acids, 21 trace minerals, linoleic acid, more beta carotene than carrots, vitamins B1, B2, B6, and E, selenium and germanium.

Goji berries are deep red in color and about the same size as a raisin. They taste like a cranberry combined with a cherry, and are typically eaten dried or in juice form.

8. Lingonberries

These small, red, oval fruits (they're about the size of a large pea) are a popular treat in Finland and other Nordic countries where their tart flavor is enjoyed in sauces and jellies.

Lingonberries are rich in the flavonoid quercetin, which is a plant antioxidant that may help to prevent cancer and heart disease. Fresh lingonberries are not easy to find in the United States, but if you do find them, you can use them as you would a cranberry. They're often eaten crushed and mixed with sugar or cooked into sauces, jams, jellies, juice and wine.

If you haven't heard of the lingonberry, maybe you've heard of one of its numerous other names: cowberry, red whortle berry, foxberry, northern mountain cranberry, dry ground cranberry, rock cranberry, partridge berry or whimberry. Or maybe not.

9. Cranberries

One of the most popular uses of cranberries, to treat urinary tract infections, has been used for centuries by indigenous cultures. Today researchers have found that cranberries contain proanthocyanidins (PACs), which inhibit bacteria, including E. coli, from adhering to the urinary tract, thereby protecting it from infection.

They're also rich in antioxidants that may play a role in preventing heart disease and cancer, and may play a role in preventing peptic ulcers by inhibiting H. pylori from adhering to the stomach.

Because cranberries are so tart, they're not usually eaten raw but instead are baked into pies, muffins and cakes, used as a juice or cooked into the American holiday favorite, cranberry sauce.

10. Raspberry

Raspberries are rich in phytonutrients for antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticarcinogenic protection. Chief among these is ellagic acid, the potent cancer fighter. Raspberries have also been found to help prevent macular degeneration, and they contain manganese, vitamin C, riboflavin, folate, niacin, magnesium, potassium, dietary fiber and copper.

Raspberries have a long history--they can be traced all the way back to prehistoric times--but began to be grown widely in the 19th century, when many new varieties, including the loganberry and boysenberry, were developed. Raspberries have a sweet, tangy taste that makes them a popular treat for snacks, desserts, salads, cereals, sauces, baking, jams, jellies and more.

11. Dewberry

Dewberries are closely related to raspberries and blackberries, with the same sweet taste, but are slightly smaller and typically purple in color. It is likely that they present similar health benefits to raspberries and blackberries.

12. Mulberry

Traditionally, mulberry fruit has been used medicinally to treat the kidneys, fatigue, anemia and weakness. Although not widely studied, it's thought that mulberries contain high levels of antioxidants and similar health benefits as other dark-colored berries like blueberries, blackberries and raspberries.

The mulberry has a sweet, somewhat bland flavor, and is commonly used in jelly, wine and desserts. In its dry form, the mulberry can be used as a raisin substitute.

13. Gooseberry

These fruits grow wild throughout the United States, but they're typically cultivated in more tropical locations like Hawaii and South Africa. They can range in color from white to green to pink or purple, and they're typically about 1/2 to 1 inch wide (though some varieties can grow as big as plums!).

Gooseberries have a sweet/sour taste somewhere between a strawberry and a pineapple. Though not too common in the United States these days, they taste great in pies, jams, jellies and cooked sauces, or eaten fresh, if you can find them. If you're looking for a sweeter berry, choose a gooseberry with a pinkish hue. The green berries are unripe and work best for sauces and pies.

Gooseberries have similar nutritional qualities as strawberries, cranberries and other berries.

14. Huckleberry

Huckleberries look just like blueberries (and are often confused with them) and taste like them too (but a bit more tart), but contain seeds that give them a unique crunchy texture. The seeds are edible, so they can be used interchangeably with blueberries, but, since they're not grown commercially, you'll have to find them in the wild.

Huckleberries have not been studied extensively, but may have similar health benefits as blueberries.

15. Chokeberry

Purple berries like chokeberries may possess as much as 50 percent more antioxidants than more common berries, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

However, the raw berries are extremely tart (hence the name "chokeberry"), so they're best when cooked and made into juice, jam or wine.

Anti-migraine ingredients: No.17 SAGE

Anti-migraine ingredients = Anti-inflammatory ingredients

No.17 SAGE

SAGE ANTI-MIGRAINE PROPERTIESANTI-INFLAMMATORY + ANTIOXIDANT
+ ANTI-CANCER

Health Benefits

Sage is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It contains flavonoids, phenolic acids and oxygen-handling enzymes, all of which give it a unique ability to prevent oxygen-based damage to cells. Sage may be useful in fighting rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, bronchial asthma and atherosclerosis.

Sage also appears to promote better brain function. A study in the June 2003 Pharmacological Biochemical Behavior found that people given sage essential oil extracts had significantly improved recall abilities compared to those given a placebo.

Sage's subtle, sweet flavor makes it a very versatile herb. It can be added to soups, sauces, salad dressings, meat dishes, casseroles, vegetables, eggs, salads and more.

Sage means "to be saved." Because sage is so effective in protecting oxygen-based damage, several companies have been conducting experiments using sage as a natural additive to cooking oils to extend shelf life and prevent the oils from going rancid.
