Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves in the world. It was once so rich that Concorde used to fly from Caracas to Paris. But in the last three years its economy has collapsed. Hunger has gripped the nation for years. Now, it’s killing people and animals that are dying of starvation. The Venezuelan government knows, but won’t admit it!!! Four in five Venezuelans live in poverty. People queue for hours to buy food. Much of the time they go without. People are also dying from a lack of medicines. Inflation is at 82,766% and there are warnings it could exceed one million per cent by the end of this year. Venezuelans are trying to get out. The UN says 2.3 million people have fled the country - 7% of the population.

Many fruits and vegetables are overlooked for their healing potential. People almost always turn to prescription drugs before they even consider modifying what they are consuming in terms of food and drink. Chemotherapy for example is an incredibly toxic drug that leaves patients feeling incredibly ill and in a horrible state of health. Some individuals choose not to go the chemotherapy route and change their eating habits – for example, going 100% organic raw vegan has proven incredible cancer-curing success for some individuals. Today I will talk about the power of the cancer and disease healing properties of the Mangosteen fruit.
The mangosteen fruit is a tropical evergreen tree that grows 7-25 metres tall. The fruit of the mangosteen is juicy, sweet and slightly tangy. The rind is inedible, however, it can be ground into a fine powder – or, the entire fruit can be juiced (rind included) in order to extract the beneficial polyphenols this fruit has to offer.
The variety of phytonutrients in mangosteen are plenty. In fact, the mangosteen is one of the only fruits that contain high levels of xanthones (xanthones are found in small amounts throughout nature, however it is most concentrated in the mangosteen rind)What are xanthones? They are a class of plant derived nutrients that hold tremendous nutritional value – there are over 20 varieties of them, however, the most widely studied are Alpha Mangostin and Gamma Mangostin.
Many Laboratory studies have conclusively found the ability of xanthones to eradicate and destroy cancer cells. Xanthones both destroy cancer and stop tumour development at each stage of the cancer forming process. Below are some of the few studies that have been performed on this fruit’s amazing cancer curing abilities:
1. Aisha and colleagues (1) extracted alpha mangostin and gamma mangostin from an extract of the mangosteen fruit rind. It’s effects were studied on colon cancer on the HCT 116 human colorectal carcinoma cells including apoptosis, cytotoxicity, anti-tumorigenicity, and how it affects cell signalling pathways. These extracts showed strong cytotoxicity due to the induction of the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis. Cell migration, cell invasion and clonogenicity, three major steps in tumour metastasis were also inhibited. When xanthone extracts were fed to mice with subcutaneous tumours, tumour growth was inhibited.
2. Kurose and colleagues (2) studied how alpha-mangostin (extracted from pericarp of the mangosteen) influenced the cell cycle in the human breast cell cancer line MDA-MB231 (carrying a p53 mutation). In cells that were treated with alpha-mangostin, mitochondria-mediated apoptosis was observed. There were also decreases in cyclins, cdc(s), CDKs and PCNA, along with G1-phase arrest and increased p21 expression. This suggested that alpha-mangostin could be used as a useful therapeutic agent for breast cancers carrying a p53 mutation.
3. *This study demonstrates not only how xanthones exhibit anticancer activity, but also how they are able to destroyresistant cancer cell lines* Khonkarn and colleagues (3) found that xanthone-loaded polymeric micelles inhibited cancer cell growth via induction of apoptosis. In vitro assays revealed that xanthone in both free form and when loaded in polymeric micelles had high cytotoxicity towards BOTH doxorubicin sensitive and resistant cancer cells! They concluded that mPEG-b-p(HPMAm-Lac(2)) micelles are a good delivery method of xanthones for cancer treatments.
4. The anti-proliferative and cytotoxic activities of mangosteen xanthones both in vitro and in mice were analyzed in a study by Watanapokasin and colleagues (4) in which they treated human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell lines (COLO 205) and mice with subcutaneous tumours (COLO 205) with mangosteen xanthones. They found that the xanthones inhibited the proliferation of target cells and also induced their death via apoptosis which involves activation of the caspase cascade. Even at relatively low doses, tumour growth was inhibited when the xanthones were administered. Given higher xanthone doses resulted in significant tumour reduction, and in some mice, tumours has disappearedThus, mangosteen xanthones have the ability to serve as anti-cancer agents for the chemotherapy of cancer!
*The list goes on! Go to pubmed.com and type in xanthones+cancer, and hundreds of studies will show up
Mangosteen Dosage Recommendations:To prevent cancer: 1 oz or more 1-3 times daily
Individuals WITH cancer: drink an entire 25-ounce glass of mangosteen juice every day for 21 days. They should also drink 1 gallon of pure water over the day to flush out bodily toxins. For more aggressive cancers I would drink as much fresh mangosteen juice as I could afford.
Why should the entire mangosteen fruit be consumed in a puree? The fruit inside the mangosteen is delicious, however the xanthones are present in the rind of the fruit, or the “pericarp” as most would call it. The pericarp, pulp, and seeds of the mangosteen provides full nutritional and healing benefits.
Why should the whole fruit be juiced, and why should you not purchase commercial items containing mangosteen?Products that contain mangosteen flavouring or mangosteen pulp (and not the pericarp) will not give you the benefits as described above. The best way to consume this fruit is to purchase the fruit in its whole, and use a juicer to juice the entire fruit. Products such as Xango are reputable, however oxidation of this juice is probable. The Xango product does have other fruit juices added to the juice however it is mostly all mangosteen juice (rind included) – look on Ebay to find Xango at a cheaper price. Remember, FRESH juice is best (taking the fruit and juicing it yourself with a juicer), but Xango is second best (in my opinion).
Where can you buy mangosteen?Mangosteen is commercially available in the US (especially the southern states, and Hawaii) – look for it at your local Asian markets or grocery stores. The fruit is most abundant in Asia, specifically Thailand. You can also find places to order mangosteen online (finally! This option was not available until 2008!). Mangosteen fruits are not cheap either – they are rather expensive – however I would rather take good care of my health than risk cancer any day! Look up “fresh mangosteen+order” on google.
What other benefits does the mangosteen fruit have? The mangosteen has been shown to include/help the following:
Anti-aging, Anti-biotic, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, Anxiety, Antioxidants, Anti-Allergy, Anti-depressant, Periodontal (gum health), Eye health, Migraines, Skin rashes, Hypertension, Pan systemic, Energizer (Energy booster), Anti-Inflammatory, Anti-Tumor, Analgesic (Pain reducer), Nerve pain, Anti-pyretic (Lowers fevers), Anti-viral, Stimulates red blood cell growth, Ulcers, Osteoporosis, Immune Modulator (help immune system), Cardio protective (helps protect heart), Cataracts, Irritable bowel syndrome, Anti-fungal, Anti-pathogenic (reduce pathogens), Anti-parasitic, Supports weight loss, Hardening of the arteries, Anti-lipidemic (lowers blood fat), and Anti-diabetic (lowers blood sugar).
*Disclaimer: This natural strategy is not meant to be used as a substitution for any doctor recommended treatments, but instead an addition to them. I can offer you a large measure of hope that this natural treatment will heal you on your way to great health. You must take care of your body and decide what is best for you – thinking critically is key.

California's Prop 37: Monsanto, GMO labelling and the public Interest

Over half of the staggering sum spent on defeating the measure of labelling comes from pesticide and biotech firms.
Last Modified: 26 Sep 2012 06:39

If Proposition 37 passes, California will be the first state to require GMO labelling[EPA]

In this November's election, California voters will decide if they have a right to know what is in the food they are eating. Proposition 37, dubbed, "The California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act", would require manufacturers to label all food items that contain genetically engineered ingredients as such.

While the initiative merely seeks to add a few words to nutrition labels, it has incurred the wrath and moneyed opposition of biotech and food giants - no doubt because they fear the initiative might herald actual regulations on an industry that has long been allowed to experiment willy-nilly with the food people consume in the United States.

Nationwide polls have indicated a bipartisan, nearly unanimous support for labelling GMOs (genetically modified organisms). At the end of August, Pepperdine University School of Public Policy and the California Business Roundtable released the most recent survey assessing the viability of California’s ballot initiatives. The poll showed 65 per cent in favour of Proposition 37 compared to 24 per cent in opposition.

Faced with those bleak odds, Monsanto, the biotech Goliath, threw in another $2.89 million on September 14 in an effort to defeat the measure - nearly doubling its total contributions heading into the homestretch of the election.

Monsanto, the single largest contributor to the effort to defeat the measure, was one of the first producers of the toxic pest control substances, DDT and PCB, both now banned in the US.

However, over the past two decades, Monsanto has attempted to transform its image from a purveyor of poisons to that of a food producer and bioengineering champion -being required to label their products threatens to undo the corporation’s careful PR work.

Monsanto seems determined to quash the Right to Know campaign, already successfully intimidating the very progressive state of Vermont from even proposing similar legislation to Prop 37.

Proposition 37 is one of 11 sundry measures that will appear on California’s November 6 ballot, but it leads the pack in attracting financial heavyweights determined to defeat it. As of mid-September, opponents to the proposition had contributed a total of $32 million.
Argentina awaits ruling on crop pesticides
Currently unregulated by the Food and Drug Administration, genetically modified ingredients are found in up to 70 per cent of food on the shelves of supermarkets across the US, including the omnipresent foods and beverages that contain high fructose corn syrup (85 per cent of US corn is genetically engineered) or traces of soybean (91 per cent of soy is GE).

Genetically engineerd food
On September 19, French researcher Professor Gilles-Eric Séralini, a molecular biologist at Caen University in France, published a groundbreaking study that, for the first time, demonstrates the long-term health effects on rats of eating genetically engineered corn and being exposed to Roundup.

Roundup is a ubiquitous pesticide that is used in conjunction with "roundup ready" seeds - seeds that produce crops designed to survive being sprayed by Roundup.
"The results were alarming," Professor Séralini told reporters during a telephone press conference held on the day the findings were announced.
According to Professor Séralini, the new study, which was conducted over the course of two years, examined the effects of feeding rats an amount of GE corn that is "comparable to what the American public eats every day".
After four months, female rats developed mammary and kidney tumours; male rats developed liver and kidney damage. Rats exposed to the chemicals were also more likely to die prematurely.
"We think it's criminal that there is this much laxness in reviewing these products," said Professor Séralini.
Michael R Taylor is the current Deputy Commissioner of the US FDA and was appointed by President Obama. Taylor's career has seesawed between Monsanto and the FDA - the agency that ought to be tasked with regulating Monsanto. But in 1991, when Taylor returned to work for the government after a decade with the biochemical corporation, he oversaw the agency’s relinquishing any responsibility for regulation of chemically altered foods, i.e., GMOs.

If Prop 37 passes, California will be the first state to require GMO labelling. The US’ current lackadaisical approach to regulating GMOs contrasts sharply with its counterparts in Europe, where labelling of all foods with genetically engineered ingredients is required and there is a relatively low yield of GE crops.
Spokesperson for the No on 37 Coalition, Kathy Fairbanks, told me that the Coalition represents, "the entire agricultural industry of California".

However, an examination of the campaign contributions made public on the website of the California Secretary of State reveals that over half of the staggering sum spent on defeating the measure comes from pesticide, chemical and biotechnology firms, including Monsanto, Dow Chemical and Syngenta.
"It is completely inaccurate to say the No on 37 Coalition is being funded by the California agricultural industry. Most of their funders are out-of-state corporations and the largest pesticide corporations," said Stacy Malkan, spokesperson for the Yes on 37 campaign, based in Oakland, California.

In fact, fewer than 50 discreet donors have contributed to the no-camp. Not surprising, opponents are trying to redefine the debate from one about consumers' fundamental right to know what is in their food to a manipulative attack on the wording of the measure and the man who wrote it.
"We're not opposed to providing fact-based information to consumers. The problem we have is with the measure. The problem is the particular lawyer who wrote the law itself," Fairbanks says.
Corn crisis: Crops suffer severe worm damage
Fairbanks asserts that "small and large businesses and ethnic convenience stores will be hit the hardest" by lawsuits enabled by the proposition. "We oppose the proposition because it will cause higher grocery bills and lead to meritless, shakedown lawsuits," Fairbanks says.
The lawyer who wrote the bill is James Wheaton, a public interest lawyer who teaches journalism law at Stanford University and the University of California Berkeley. Wheaton founded the First Amendment Project and serves as president of the Environmental Law Foundation.
Wheaton dismisses Fairbanks' concerns: "First, we expect companies will simply comply - how much does it cost to add a few words to labels several years after this passes? Nothing."
And perhaps more important, as Wheaton point out: "There's no money in meritless lawsuits."
Wheaton drafted the measure because, as he says, "Since 50 countries around the world already require labelling of genetically engineered foods, it seemed time Americans get the same right. But we know big agribusiness will work tirelessly with government bureaucrats to deny that to Americans." (emphasis mine)

Grassroots support for Prop 37
Malkan explains that Proposition 37 represents California farm owners and workers, small businesses and organic companies, including Strauss Family Creamery and Amy’s Kitchen. Proponents have raised just under $3 million from over 1,000 donors.
Support for Proposition 37 has galvanised a long-standing opposition to Monsanto. On September 17, the one-year anniversary of the Occupy movement, activists protested outside Monsanto’s office in Davis, California, a place where vast expanses of farmland and food production exist next to biotechnology research. Around the state, supporters of the labelling initiative staged similar rallies.

Christopher Hsu - Executive Member - New Mexico Medical Cannabis Patients Alliance - Ocotober 12, 2012

Christopher Hsu will talk to us about the fate of PTSD for New Mexico patients as well as the state of New Mexico Medical Cannabis program, and how it differs from other states.
Remember to check out the Cannabis Quilt, which will be unveiled this coming Monday, October 15, 2012 in DC.

Rescheduling arguments will be heard by the U.S. Court of Appeals on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 in Washington, DC.   How can the feds continue to keep marijuana as a schedule 1 drug, and claim that marijuana has no medicinal value when the proof is in the pudding from sea to shining sea?  Patients of all ages, with varying conditions are clearly benefiting from the vast medicinal benefits of marijuana.  Not to mention the federal patients who have been receiving cannabis from the federal government since the 1970's on a monthly basis, one would think it is kind of hard to deny the medicinal benefits.  However, with the complete lack of common sense in government these days, another delay, or denial is always possible.  However, it appears the patients, and their families have had about enough of the nonsense coming from some lawmakers who likely have big pharma in their pockets.  With marijuana allowing many patients to reduce their intake of big pharma pills, we won't be surprised if there will be a continuation of the fight to keep marijuana out of the hands of the patients who greatly benefit while reducing their exposure to toxic pharma chemicals.

Props to the advocates who complained to Clear Channel to demand the removal of the Portland, Oregon billboards that were blatant misrepresentations of marijuana users.  The billboards featured a picture of a haggard looking child with bruised eyes, and the words "Marijuana - What's good about it? Nothing"   Clear Channel decided to remove the billboards after receiving complaints, because it was not clear who was behind the ads.  The organization listed on the order, and domain registration said they were not responsible for the billboards.

Migraine Cure: Marijuana Gives Miracle Relief

Article from Oct 2012

Migraine Cure: Marijuana Gives Miracle Relief

Phil Leveque was an Army Infantryman, Doctor of Pharmacology, Forensic Toxicologist and Osteopathic Physician.

Marijuana migraine
Courtesy: ediblemj.com
(PORTLAND, OR) - I guess I was a bit excited when I wrote this and my first article on the subject “Marijuana VS Migraines: Modern Medical Miracle” in Salem-News.com June 30th 2008. Then I was excited about it because the best treatment I had used was Demerol and Benadry injections which knocked the patient out for at least a whole day. This is much better.

Recently in Salem-News.com, a story appeared by Dr. Dianne Stafford, October 3rd 2012 entitled, “Not Just A Headache: Eleven Ways Not To Treat A Migraine”. I hoped that it would be some good stuff but it was a fizzling blah. She didn’t mention one treatment which was a good idea because there are some 20 different pharmaceuticals most of which don’t work for most people. For a migraine sufferer her list is worthless.

I don’t consider myself any great stuff about migraine therapy but I had a real opportunity in this regard when Oregon legalized marijuana for about 10 diseases including severe pain, spasms (of smooth muscle such as blood vessels in the brain), and nausea and vomiting.

Cannabis/marijuana works well for all of these. I must have ended up with about 50 migraine patients who had previously been prescribed or given dozens of poorly working drugs.

At the time no other physician/pharmacologist had published that cannabis/marijuana was effective for migraines, so I published my article. I received 32 responses on 8 pages from July 1st, 2008 till September 1st, 2011. Some are quite short but others are long extolling the effectiveness of cannabis/marijuana therapy. You can read my article and comments. I will reprint a few of the shorter ones:

Anonymous September 1, 2011: I have recently started having migraine headaches and I have to say it is painful. I recently started smoking marijuana in order to cope with the pain and it helps. Luckily for me I live in Denver where marijuana is legal and I go to this one dispensary closest to my home and get some Kush and it usually takes my pain right away. The bad part is that I am risking being fired from my job because of it.

509meds December 14, 2010: Marijuana cures all pain period. I’m a patient for migraines and I legally grow some strong weed for pain here in Washington state and it works great marijuana is truly Gods gift to us all so f@#k all those ignorant dinosaurs who compare marijuana to meth and heroin, weed is not the problem it’s the solution so spread the love and support the marijuana movement.

Ashton September 1, 2010: I’ve suffered from migraines my whole life. I’ve seen numerous doctors and tried countless medicines. I eventually found one that reduces the amount of migraines I get but nothing helps the onset leaving me useless. All I can do is go to sleep. I’ve smoked for about three years but didn’t realize this was the answer till about a year ago. It was life changing and now every time I had weed and a migraine I smoke of course. I just needs to be legal, it will boost our economy and empty our jail cells!

Kris. k July 13, 2010: I’m 15 I play sports and get involved in school I suffer from migraines for about 9 years I get them a lot like at least 2 a week mostly I've been getting them 3 or 4 times a week to the point were im sick and cant do nothing but my parents don’t want me to do marijuana ive taken all sorts of pills to help they don’t work ive even been given vicoden it doesn’t work though what do I do.

Dawnie November 8, 2009: I’ve dealt with migraines since I was 17, ive tried a lot of meds and nothing seemed to help much. About 4 years ago I took a few puffs of marijuana and wasn’t sure if I liked the feeling but realized it helped my head. I use it now to prevent migraines and it really works. I also use it after I get a migraine and it slows down enough for me to cope. I am 42 years old and it took this long to find something that really works.

Alexa July 16, 2009: I had just graduated from high school only a few months ago. Although marijuana is not legal many kids smoke it regardless. Throughout high school I had smoked a lot of pot. I had started getting migraines when I was 15. Because they were very infrequent it wasn’t a huge problem. Now I have been getting them 5-7 times a month. I had been visiting the doctor many times within these months and nothing seemed to work. I thought I’d experiment with pot and my migraines. I wanted to see if this drug would help my migraines. It helped significantly. Although it didn’t completely get rid of my migraine, it certainly helped my pain level

Washington Legalization Campaign Releases TV Ad

by  • August 8, 2012 • BlogCannabisPolitics

Washington
New Approach Washington hopes to legalize an ounce of cannabis for all adults in the Evergreen State, ending thousands of arrests so that law enforcement can concentrate on serious and violent crime.
New Approach Washington, the group behind Initiative 502, the Evergreen State’s upcoming cannabis legalization measure, has just released their first TV ad.  The ad has been deemed ambitious by some, and as too negative by some legalization supporters.
I-502 has certainly garnered much controversy within the cannabis community with various factions split on whether to support, oppose or remain neutral on the measure.  Many activists don’t support the measure because of the per se DUI provision that may ensnare non-impaired drivers, particularly medical marijuana patients, with a driving under the influence provision merely for having THC metabolites in their blood stream, among other reasons. Activists that support the measure counter that the DUI provision is necessary for passage and that a greater good will be accomplished as the number of DUI arrests and convictions due to cannabis will pale in comparison to the number of people currently arrested for marijuana possession in Washington State.
Supporting activists also latch onto the fact that any problematic provisions may be reformed later through another initiative or the legislative process. These activists maintain that it is important to pass a legalization measure first; that activists shouldn’t be waiting on a perfect measure while opposing good progress.  The Seattle Hempfest, the world’s largest pro-cannabis legalization rally, has decided to remain neutral on the measure.  Personally, I am very sympathetic to the activists that oppose the measure as I am not a fan of the per se DUI provision, nor do I support the restriction on personal gardens under the measure.  However, as an activist, I can’t help but support the measure as I view it as a step in the right direction for the national movement.  I also hold out hope that the measure may be improved after passage.
New Approach Washington has certainly assembled a top-notch professional team that is systematically working to win at the ballot box this November.  Polls demonstrate that females, particularly mothers, will be an important demographic to sway if we hope to end cannabis prohibition and this first ad certainly seems targeted toward mothers.  SurveyUSA recently polled Washington voters, finding that 55% support I-502 while 32% oppose.  Hopefully, this approach holds up and convinces a majority of Washington voters that prohibition is a failed policy that needs to be repealed.

Google Search to Start Targeting Copyright Violators...

Article from Aug 2012

The new policy, meant to promote high-quality media sources on the web, won't banish sites like torrenthound.com entirely -- but they will turn up much lower in results.

In a bid to steer Internet users to higher-quality video, audio, images and text on the web, Google beginning next week will push links that most likely contain content that violates copyrights lower in search results.

The effort should thrill the creators of TV shows, movies and music that have long complained of Internet pirates who illegally post their content on websites they have no control over and, therefore, earn no money from.

Google said in a blog post Friday that sites receiving a large number of valid copyright removal notices will continue to be listed during a search, though much lower on the results page.

An example of some of the sites that could be negatively impacted by Google's new policy are filestube.com, extratorrent.com, torrenthound.com, bitsnoop.com and isohunt.com.

The new "signal," the latest of more than 200 already used in Google search algorithms, will apply to all of the sites the Google index touches, which amounts to an estimated 30 trillion unique URLs.

"The ranking change," senior vp engineering Amit Singhal blogged, "should help users find legitimate, quality sources of content more easily -- whether it's a song previewed on NPR's music website, a TV show on Hulu or new music streamed from Spotify."

In a statement, the MPAA cautiously applauded the move.

"We are optimistic that Google's actions will help steer consumers to the myriad legitimate ways for them to access movies and TV shows online, and away from the rogue cyberlockers, peer-to-peer sites, and other outlaw enterprises that steal the hard work of creators across the globe. We will be watching this development closely – the devil is always in the details – and look forward to Google taking further steps to ensure that its services favor legitimate businesses and creators, not thieves."

The RIAA on Friday called the new policy "a potentially significant change" that it has been "urging Google to take for a long time."

"Google has signaled a new willingness to value the rights of creators," the RIAA said in a press release. "That is good news indeed. And the online marketplace for the hundreds of licensed digital services embraced by the music business is better today than it was yesterday."

Siggraph 2012: PC Makers Target Media And Entertainment Market...

Article from Aug 2012

Dell, HP and Lenovo converged on CG conference.

PC makers Dell, HP and Lenovo converged on annual CG conference Siggraph this week with an aim of grabbing a bigger stake in the media and entertainment space.

Siggraph 2012: 'Hotel Transylvania' Previewed by Director Genndy Tartakovsky

"The PC system vendors are absolutely getting more aggressive in the media and entertainment space," observed Greg Estes, media and entertainment industry executive at NVIDIA. "They perceive there is an opening with some of the latest decisions Apple has made."

HP, for instance, recently teamed up with Adobe and camera maker Red to introduce its new Z820 Red Edition desktop workstation, a customized version of the HP Z820 that comes ready for production with a Red Rocket accelerator card and two Red SSD card readers.

"We are not aiming to get away from Mac," Red exec Ted Schilowitz told The Hollywood Reporter. "But it's pretty obvious that Apple's focus is in the mobile computing world. [Filmmakers] drive a lot data. Mac is viable, but if want the most horsepower, you are now looking at HP."

Dell has formed an advisory board of professionals that use Apple's Final Cut. According to Scott Hamilton, Dell's vertical market strategist for workstations, some of the company's advisors have stated discontent with Final Cut Pro X and Apple's workstations and "they've said `we feel abandoned by Apple.' Lenovo—which was at Siggraph with its latest ThinkPad and ThinkStation technology—is aiming to make inroads into the professional media & entertainment space by certifying its technology for tools such as the Avid Media Composer and Adobe CS6.

Siggraph reported attendance of 21,212 as it wrapped Thursday at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Assembly committee backs California film tax credit bill...

Article from Aug 2012

By Richard Verrier

A state bill aimed at curbing runaway production has moved closer to becoming law.

The Assembly Appropriations Committee unanimously supported a bill that would extend funding for California's film and television tax credit program. Funding for the program is due to expire next year.

California sets aside $100 million annually for dozens of projects applying for credits between 20% and 25% of qualified production expenses for movies and TV shows.

The bill, however, was amended to provide for an extension of two years instead of five years. Industry backers sought a longer-term funding commitment to compete with other states that offer film tax credits, but that has been a tough sell in the state's current fiscal climate.

The measure now goes to the full state Assembly for a vote, which is likely to take place next week. The state Senate is expected to take up a similar bill later this month. A Senate committee in June also supported a similar two-year extension.

California lawmakers first enacted the program in 2009 in an effort to compete with nearly 40 states that offer tax incentives and rebates to filmmakers.

Creative England to Invest $1.56 million in Digital Companies...

Article from Aug 2012

The British regional funding giant will pump the cash into small and medium sized companies to support digital fiction projects for the BBC and Channel 4.

LONDON – U.K. regional government-backed funding agency Creative England will pump £1 million ($1.56 million) into the digital creative sector with its latest round of funding into the so-called Digital Fiction Factory (DFF).

Creative England Opens $796,000 Fund for Applications

Creative England Launches Two Funds For Regional Filmmaking Grants

The cash will be distributed to support small and medium sized companies across the North of England to develop new digital fiction formats, meaning TV-like content for online and mobile platforms, for the BBC and Channel 4.

Described by Creative England's business development director Jim Farmery as a "21st century production and development center," the DFF is billed as a "creative partnership between Conker Media, the BBC, Channel 4 and Creative England."

The arrangement marks one of the first creative commissioning partnerships between the two U.K. broadcasters.

Creative England, founded in 2011, is an organization that provides funding support to independent film, TV and other creative businesses in all regions of England except for London. It is backed by regional governments.

Funding packages of between £10,000 ($15,600) and £150,000 ($234,571) will be posted to companies to develop proof-of-concepts and prototypes, which may be taken on to full production by either of the partner broadcasters.

The cash boost follows the recent plans for Creative England's $1.56 million business investment fund and marks the second strand to be made available through Creative England's £5 million ($7.8 million) Regional Growth Fund awarded to stimulate jobs and growth within the digital and creative sectors.

BBC North director Peter Salmon said: "The Digital Fiction Factory was originally created between the BBC and Conker Media to create a pan-industry partnership to find new ways to engage with the audience in the digital space. Following Channel 4's recent membership we are delighted that Creative England is now joining and that one of the first companies to benefit is a Newcastle-based digital company" named Riff Raff.

Channel 4 head of online Richard Davidson-Houston said: "It's great that Creative England has seen the potential and is joining in."
So far, 244 businesses are already part of the DFF network.
