For the last couple of years the monthly TV industry magazine 'Televisual' has produced figures for camera rental trends in the UK, and I thought some might find these interesting. Data was collated from detailed surveys filled in by 26 of the country's leading gear hire companies.
If you believed the trade press, the whole industry had gone file-based, but the figures show that in 2010 HD file-based models made up half the rentals, with HD tape-based models making up 30% of all hires, while SD tape-based models account for less than 20% of hires.
Interestingly, the most popular rental camera, accounting for 20% of all rentals, was the tape-based Sony HDW-790P, which is all the more extraordinary because the camera was discontinued by Sony over three years ago. It has not only survived this, but moved up in popularity from 4th to 1st this year - toppling 2009 winner the EX3 - obviously a familiar, tried and tested HDCAM workhorse.
The Canon 5D is new in there, but the highest new entry is the Sony PDW-F800, while the Red One has dropped from third to sixth place.
The cameras most facility houses invested in last year were the PDW-F800, PDW-700, EX3, Canon XF-305, Canon 5D and Arri Alexa. The hottest item on their shopping lists in 2011 is Sony's forthcoming digital-35mm model, the PMW-F3, followed by the Arri Alexa, Sony's new 50mbps PMW-500 and Panasonic's innovative looking AG-AF101.
The 2010 Top 10 in order - followed by their average daily rental price (£1 = $1.6) and format - is....
1 Sony HDW-790P (£255) HDCAM
2 Sony PMW-EX3 (£120) XDCAM EX
3 Sony PDW-F800 (£270) XDCAM HD422
4 Sony PDW-700 (£245) XDCAM HD422
5 Sony DSR-450 (£140) DVCAM
6 Red One (£430) Red
7 Sony HDW-F900R (£340) HDCAM
8 Sony PMW-EX1R (£100) XDCAM EX
9 Canon 5D (£105) DSLR
10 Sony DVW-970 (£200) Digibeta
