Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves in the world. It was once so rich that Concorde used to fly from Caracas to Paris. But in the last three years its economy has collapsed. Hunger has gripped the nation for years. Now, it’s killing people and animals that are dying of starvation. The Venezuelan government knows, but won’t admit it!!! Four in five Venezuelans live in poverty. People queue for hours to buy food. Much of the time they go without. People are also dying from a lack of medicines. Inflation is at 82,766% and there are warnings it could exceed one million per cent by the end of this year. Venezuelans are trying to get out. The UN says 2.3 million people have fled the country - 7% of the population.

okay - we (as doc community) seem to be doing well with the academy in the
90's.

1990 - winner - Barbara Kopple
1991 - Allie Light and Irving Sarah
1992 - Barbara Trent and David Kasper
1993 - Susan Raymond
1994 - Frieda Lee Mock
1995--1999 - guys ; -)
2000 - Mark Jonathan Harris and Deborah Oppenheimer
2001 (two french guys won - but two women nominated)
2002 - Columbine won - though several women nominated, including our own
Yana Gorskaya's film was nominated, and she won the ACE award that year.
2003 - guy
2004 - Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski
2005 - First year in this list ONLY GUYS nominated
2006 -guy wins - but six women nominated
2007 - Alex Gibney and Eva Orner
2008 - guy
2009 - guy but 4 ladies nominated
this year
2010 - 2 or 3 women nominated

all this is from this list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Documentary_Feature

I think they have listed director and producer along side each other - so
that might have skewed the list some - but out of 19 years - 8 women have
won and someone else can run the numbers for nominations....
